What is the consensus on a great player who changes teams? Joe Montana, Goober Manning, Greg Maddux, Arod, etc. Like you are a true Cubs fan, but really like Maddux so you rooted for the Braves too.

I think there's still a little front-running involved when someone does that. I mean, you could like Maddux as much as you want but if the Cubs were as good after Maddux left as they are now, nobody was becoming a Braves fan because he left. My friend Jerry who died claimed to be a Dodgers fan. Andy Pafko was his favorite player and when he went to Brooklyn Jerry's loyalty followed. But the Cubs sucking was part of that. And, just like li'l danny bernstein, no matter how many times Jerry proclaimed he wasn't a Cubs fan, I know he really was.

I don't believe there's anything wrong with not following a team closely when they suck. I will not follow my favorite teams closely when they're awful, aside from perhaps any transactions they make.

That's different than cheering for the Seahawks when you were born and raised in Elk Grove.

I root for Chicago teams, minus the Cubs and for this year at least the White Sox, but I'll root for players on other teams and want them to win/lose.

I won't be a Saints fan when he leaves but I was rooting hard for them in 2009. I rooted for Reggie Miller as long as it didn't hurt the Bulls.

I would say cheering for a team in a series or in the Superbowl is fine because of a player. But not suddenly changing loyalties all together and suddenly now you are a Bronco or a Brave fan.

Obviously, a Milwaukee native has no hockey team. I'm saying a Milwaukee native who is a Packers fan who ignores the Brewers and claims to be a Cubs fan is silly. this goes back to the original post of a Chicagoland native who call sthemselves a Yankees fan...stupid.

We have several Brewers/Cubs fans in our office. They are all Wisconsin natives. They used to catch the Cubs on the superstation. Their allegiances weren't conflicted because the Brewers were an AL team. There was no inter league play except for the World Series. As such, there was very little conflict with cheering for both teams.

These guys all hate the Bears, but love the Blackhawks.

I never had a problem with their logic.

I agree. I'm not going to pay as close attention to the Sox when they're terrible. But that addresses another modern idea- that "all that matters is winning a championship". For a real fan, so obviously not true.
