Is there a template for a pitcher regressing to the mean, and then rising back to dominant status in the same season? Honest question, I can't recall seeing it before, but the Cubs haven't had too many great pitchers in my lifetime either.

Good point and good question. Usually they mow through and the regression is the next season. Probably case on point for Jake and his struggles now. Too lazy to dig up stats for that but I am sure you are correct.

I think contrearas for the sox was good for the first half of a season, unhitable for the second and first of the next season then back to good in the seine half

Just a passing point of fact that on June 16, 2015, one Jake Arrieta left the game he had started in the bottom of the fifth after having thrown 112 pitches down four runs in a game the Cubs would eventually lose to the Injuns (a team that would end the year 81-80*) 6-0 ... at day's end his ERA was a robust 3.40 with (for those that care about such things) a record of 6-5.

What does that mean? In and of itself nothing per se ... only perhaps worth noting that a year and a couple weeks ago Jake was a run of the mill dogshit pitcher, and then went on a literally historic run. Perhaps worth a mention for those with a somewhat understandably shortened memory of things.

(* - lest anyone unnecessarily squirt their skirt wondering why they only played 161 games, they had a makeup scheduled w/ the Tigers on Oct 5th that would have been played if only either team had been a half-game out of a playoff spot, which neither were ... thus, the choice to say 'fuck it')

Turned the game on in the car just in time to hear Arrieta give up a homer. I then turned the game off and went to TJ Maxx and got a sweet new UA golf shirt. And I don't think I'll be tuning back in.

Yes, I recall him being slightly above average or average at the start of last season, and then he went balls deep in every opposing line up the rest of the season. The only difference this year is he also started the year historically dominant, and has regressed considerably. He went back wards so far this year.

He looks good tonight. I know he gave up the two homers...but he is attacking hitters. Pitch count is low...no walks. Remember, the Pirates have a pretty decent offense and they've seen Arrieta a ton.

Honestly, unless something terrible happens soon...this is going to go down as a decent Arrieta start. Hopefully something to build upon.

Wow. The reigning Cy Young winner goes 6 innings, gives up 3 runs. And you hope he builds on it.

Dont set that bar too high!

At least he isn't as awful as Chris Sale. Small consolation.

Clusterfuck of horrible baseball all the way around the diamond. For two weeks now. All to blame. This is bullshit. No excuses other than bad play by the so called best team in baseball. Better get it together soon.

I feel for Arrieta. I doubt he gets paid what he's been looking for if this continues.

That being said, organizationally, the Cubs may have dodged a HUGE bullet not resigning this guy so fast.

Need to develop home grown pitchers fast before these rookie contracts start to expire, and the Cubs have to make some tough calls on who to keep.

The only guy I would sign now is Hendricks. Been the best all season just without the W-L record. Lots of money left on the books but this team has plenty of issues that better be addressed soon.

Number of home grown pitchers on 25 man roster-0
Number of pitching prospects in system-0

Underwood is blown up and struggled this year
Pierce sucks

Hatch signed so I guess he is the only prospect now once he actually suits up.

Hatch is intriguing. Hopefully, he can be the first.

No doubt about it, this team has sucked the last little bit.

But better to happen now than later in the season. Maybe this will be a blessing in disguise and force them to make some moves at the trading deadline to shore up the problem areas. If things were cruising along they might have been tempted to just let things ride.

Need to come out strong these next 2 games and get to the break with some positives.

Factoid:

The top three teams in the NL Central now have identical records to the top three teams in the AL Central.

Cubs/Indians 52-34
Cards/Sox 44-41
Pirates/Tigers 45-42

Indians performance having no impact on their home attendance; averaging about 300
fewer fans in 2016 vs 2015 per home game:

The Cubs offense is going to show up this weekend vs. Pittsburgh pitching. They can still lose these games, but I would expect the Cubs offense to up 5+ in both weekend games.

This team has been awful for a month now. The starting pitching is getting bad, and the bullpen is terrible. The few games they're leading, they blow. The offense has been shit also. They have given up on the patient approach they had early in the season. The walk totals have dropped big time. While the lead is still decent, they have allowed the Pirates back in it. A Pirates sweep and shit gets real.

Theo needs to step up and deal for a starter and 2 bullpen arms. Another bat wouldn't hurt either, but I want pitching.
