Cubs split the season series with Atlanta...same as the Sox so far. Guess we can't file that one under "Incredible. Baseball. Things."

The Sox are a team with overrated starters and a shitty bullpen that by some miracle of luck has defied it's mistaken identity as a team with strong pitching by riding an unbelievable contribution from Adam Eaton, Tim Anderson, Melky Cabrera, Todd Frazier and Brett Lawrie to a winning record. Those 5 have been incredible this year both defensively and offensively as Chris Sale regresses due to a probable arm injury, Jose Quintana continues his average existence masquerading as an ace to the analytics community, Rodon busts and the bullpen implodes.

Abreu heating up has been a boon for them recently, but the Sox are still a shitty team being buoyed by the superhuman performances of a handful of veterans and one rookie. Oddly enough none of them are adequately appreciated by advanced metrics. Credit where it is due to Hahn for finding these guys, because all of them are his doing (except maybe Frazier). Anderson's success in defiance of the new "right way to play" gives you a lot of hope for Collins, Call and Fisher.

I disagree a bit with you on Sale, but right now, I don't see a playoff team here, much less a team that could win a series or two in the playoffs.

They aren't a shitty team, and, as you said, probably not a playoff team. It's a decent team. Sale and Quintana (until recently for both) have been excellent, but the rest of the rotation is hit or miss. Offensively, still too many outs in that lineup, but the top 4 or 5 hitters are pretty solid right now. They definitely need another 1-2 bats, but that probably be coming this year. From a pitching perspective, they have 5 guys (assuming Rodon's health), but there will be ups and downs.

It's probably an 85 win team if everything goes great.

Too bad Folty isn't hitting today. I saw a game in HS where he went 2- 3 with 2 home runs and the out literally knocked over the left fielder. Oh yeah he also threw a no hitter striking out 12 in 5 innings and was up to 97. Not a bad day at the office.
