2016 - Lose a 10+ game lead and don't make the playoffs
2004 - Not even Nomar can help and don't make the playoffs
1969 - 5 hall of famers but still no playoffs

How do we rank them?

I honestly don't even think its possible to miss the post season..but if they somehow pulled it off, it would disgust me enough to stop watching for awhile.

2003 is the worst by far.

This is gone beyond a slump. They are getting crushed in almost every game they play. This morning it was all because Fowler went down, but Fowler doesn't pitch, so I'm not sure what they are smoking at the Score.

1984 was worse than 2003.

It just didn't have the spotlight moment.

It is a mindset thing. The team is / was all about "You go, we go" with Fowler. Maddon ended every dugout pre-game speech with it starting sometime last season, and through this season until he went down.

I think it is in everyone's head now. Fowler is a big part of the team.

And you are correct in that he does not pitch.

JORR is a big proponent of mental makeup. He'd be right here.

1984 was the worst because they were the best team and Detroit wanted anybody but the Cubs that season. But baseball happened.

Come on man. Detroit was the best team in baseball that year. They were not afraid of either team.

I have heard several interviews with former Tigers who said they wanted no part of the Cubs and were very happy to face the Padres who won their world series beating the Cubs. I am 52 years young and remember that season like it was yesterday. They were relieved to not play the Cubs.

I am a Sox fan and I must tell you, don't worry. You are making the playoffs (barring catastrophic injuries.) Worry at that point.

I don't know ... 1 game away vs 5 outs away?

As someone that has watched and suffered through all the Cub failures since 1969 . This collapse would be the only one that follows such a great season like 2015. They took off like gangbusters this year. This collapse is epic.
A win in the Pirate finale would sure make me feel better. Going into the break with a 7 game lead. What's really hard to watch is the complete collapse of the pitching.

What about the 1970 Cubs, jimmy? They had a 5 game lead in late June and lost 12 straight.

Doc,you must have espn or something. I was going to mention my favorite Cubs team (1970) choke job in the above post but deleted it. The team where they had Pappas (Lackey),Callison in RF (Hayward) and lost their catcher early in the season with Hundley (Shwarber).

midseason acquisition of Pepitone helped. Wonder if Theo has a slugger coming.

HEY NOW! i seem to remember a certain team in 2005 having some kind of a late season chokejob/collapse where the indians nearly ran down a giant lead in the final few days of the season.... how did that work out for them?

clearly the cubs are just more efficient than "that team from 2005" and they're getting the collapse out of the way by the ASB so they can focus on more important things a la "#WeAreGood" aka "#WhyNotUs?"

(actually i'm surprised someone hasn't tried hocking a t-shirt with #WhyNotUs? on the front and a list of reasons on the back)

77 was tough for me. They started out hot and were 25ish games over at the end of June with at least an 8 game lead. They went in the tank and finished 3rd with an 81-81 record. First of many disappointments for this Cub fan.

If the current trend continues, I would think this is the most comparable. Both teams coming off surprisingly successful campaigns in the prior year. Both teams with 'upgrades' in pitching and hitting. HUGE expectations.

Biggest difference is this team is currently likeable. That 2004 team was not. Take out the little Stone feud and they were still hard to take. I wanted to see them win, but didn't care for what I saw and heard from most players, coaches and mgmt.

+1. Fun team though led by Herman Franks. Read somewhere where Leo was actually offered this job before they hired Franks. Talk about a long time ago and a way different era.

Let's hope this is merely a speed bump for this team. Anything short of a WS appearance will be considered a disappointment and I don't see them choking to the extent that they miss the post season. If so, that would certainly rank up there with the biggest choke jobs in franchise history.

But the 04 team was never fun or winning a ton. Just 6 months of "they're gonna go on a run..."

I love it when Cub fans have open therapy sessions here.

It's like watching Panther when he isn't around family.
