This is gone beyond a slump. They are getting crushed in almost every game they play. This morning it was all because Fowler went down, but Fowler doesn't pitch, so I'm not sure what they are smoking at the Score.

It is a mindset thing. The team is / was all about "You go, we go" with Fowler. Maddon ended every dugout pre-game speech with it starting sometime last season, and through this season until he went down.

I think it is in everyone's head now. Fowler is a big part of the team.

And you are correct in that he does not pitch.

JORR is a big proponent of mental makeup. He'd be right here.

I was thinking it's all about Fowler when the bullpen continued to collapse and Lester turned into a BP pitcher his last two starts.

Now now. Arrieta had that 5 run start the other nite that he is going to build on.

Depends if the Cardinals get back to par at home.

Pirates/Nats/Giants/Cards all have stronger minor league systems going into the trade deadline. In terms of either calling up help from the minors or flipping prospects for arms/help at the trade deadline:

+1. Fun team though led by Herman Franks. Read somewhere where Leo was actually offered this job before they hired Franks. Talk about a long time ago and a way different era.

Let's hope this is merely a speed bump for this team. Anything short of a WS appearance will be considered a disappointment and I don't see them choking to the extent that they miss the post season. If so, that would certainly rank up there with the biggest choke jobs in franchise history.

I can still hear Brickhouse say, "Here comes Herman", when Franks would waddle out to the mound.
That year was Sutter's coming out party but he ran out of gas late in the season. Murcer was also horrible the last few weeks.

'77 Cubs Superstar:

Biittner was a good contact hitter. His best season came with the Cubs in 1977 when he played in a career-high 138 games, hit 28 doubles and batted .298

What about the 1970 Cubs, jimmy? They had a 5 game lead in late June and lost 12 straight.

Doc,you must have espn or something. I was going to mention my favorite Cubs team (1970) choke job in the above post but deleted it. The team where they had Pappas (Lackey),Callison in RF (Hayward) and lost their catcher early in the season with Hundley (Shwarber).

midseason acquisition of Pepitone helped. Wonder if Theo has a slugger coming.

I wasn't alive then, jimmy. But I used to listen to LPs of radio highlights from 68/69/70. Pantyhose commercials and Don Young. Willie Smith walk offs on opening day.

Jack Brickhouse was so excited about the team and then they just shit all over him.

Up yours, you old prick. The '77 Hitmen hung around for a bit, too. I liked that team.

I modeled my Little League game after Jim Spencer.

Not sure if it was '77 but I remember Sutter striking out the side on 9 pitches. Unhittable. As for Murcer and his warning track power - never really a big fan.

Herman had some memorable run ins with umpires. Always entertaining.

As for Old Muffin head, he lived and died that team then got ran out by Harry. Kind of sad. On the radio (and some TV) not much better than Lou and Vince. Great announcers!

I'm not a cubs fan, but I am baseball fan. I wasn't around for '69.
I was around for '84 and '03.
This team is better than both '84 and '03. I think the '03 bed wetting was worse than '84, but then again, that marlins team did prove to be better than the Cubs.

This team will win their division and be fine. If they don't it will be a bigger chokejob than both '84 and '03..I don't see that happening.
