Once Heyward is benched that'll be fixed.

You might want to check Heyward's July. I know today was an oh-fer, but he has been alright in the six hole.

Hurdle fell asleep at the wheel there in the 8th. 2 outs, runner on 2nd, tie game. You have a LHP on the mound with Bryant (200 OPS points better vs LHP than RHP) due up, followed by Rizzo (400 OPS points worse vs LHP than RHP).

You IBB Bryant to 1B and get your Lefty reliever against a guy (Rizzo) batting .198 vs LHP this year..with 2 outs..and then a force at any bag, in case you get a weird infield play type hit.

But Hurdle's old-skoool. Not Tony LaRussa win World-Series by playing smart baseball no matter how lame it looks old-skool. Just old-skool.

You're describing one of those most old-school moves in baseball. What are you talking about?

I think the decision to walk the bases loaded in order to face an All-Star on an 8 at bat hit streak would be considered... not smart.

And in case you want to remain oblivious, Jon Niese throws with his left hand.

Robin Ventura has probably done this MANY times.

Bases would not have been loaded. Only one guy on when Bryant comes to bat (Szczur on 2nd). Bryant would've been the 2nd guy and would've given you a force at any bag....a good thing. And then you get a LHP vs a guy who is batting .196 vs LHP (Rizzo), rather than pitching to a guy (Bryant) who hits LHP better than RHP. Image

They finally won a game. Let's pop on some Cool and the Gang and celebrate.

False.

Won't lead to anything and hurt our draft status.

I see. A force at any 'bag'...you're excluding home.

I might still IBB Bryant with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1B open. Don't think I'd walk the lead runner to 90 feet from home, tho, if the situation were runners on 1st and 2nd. But with 1B open and that LH pitcher vs that hitter sequence and only the one guy on 2nd?

I get that Rizzo put the ball in play and got on base against lefties all day, seeing-eye grounders and what-not; stats still say Rizzo's likely to do what he did when he eventually took his turn at the pate that inning--ground out.

I've seen more games lost by managers pitching to guys who they could've easily IBB'd and faced a better matchup than I've seen lost due to a manager IBBing a guy. Machismo? Some misguided idea of sportsmanship that keeps so many managers from not using the IBB as often as they could/should.

And in the situation in the top of the 8th today, Hurdle had a reason beyond wanting to get his pitcher to a better matchup--force out at any bag with a likely ground-ball hitter (at least vs lefties) coming to the plate gives your IF more ways to get that final out than a throw to first.

Well I am sure the rest of the national broadcast audience shared Kasper's over the top emotion that Rizzo missed the cycle in a 12-6 game.

 Rizzo is the face of MLB. He is never ever mentioned in Pittsburgh ever beside Pirates games. Cub fans need to get over themselves.

He has nationally run commercials for MLB.

He is the face of MLB Gameday this year, as Adam Jones was last year.

Another Rizzo spot for MLB.
