It's about time.

Until we see pitch limits on travel ball and the end to year round pitching, this won't do a ton to stop the injuries.

Kids could also put the baseball down for a few months in the fall and winter and pick up a basketball or a football. That would probably help with arm injuries.

The one "advantage" to travel ball tourneys is that there are innings(not pitch) limits.

Unless the kid is a starter in basketball/football, good luck with them not catching hell from travel coaches. Everyone says they want a break, but when the rest of the masses move, it's damned hard to get your kid out of the group.

The travel coaches job is to make money off of the kids family. Of course they don't want them doing anything else. Plus if the kid is actually any type of decent athlete he will be on the field/court.

The Trib is all over this. Love it. Someone had to stop these idiots from destroying young arms.

Comments

GoldGlover
My recollection is Carey Wood of the Cubs in high school threw an average of 150 pitches in 7 inning games. He was great but he burned out fast, his Texas high school coach ruined one of the best arms ever. All to win in high school. Parents should monitor the swine.

High School baseballs governing body requires mandatory pitch counts for all high school pitchers. Good work.

Reminds me of the city playoffs in 1999. We had our ace (Justin Turner) pitching on 2 days rest. He threw what had to be close to 200 pitches in the city championship game. At the end he was throwing with all heart. We won so I guess it was worth it.

How much were you guys losing by if he got up to 200 pitches? If he was an ace, don't you get that shit done in 100?

The game was close throughout.

There is no scenario where this is acceptable.

He's the baseball coach at Genoa Kingston HS and he let his pitcher throw 167 pitches yesterday. This is after he threw a complete game on Saturday and pitched 2 innings on Monday.

The Kid is committed to Illinois St and has a chance to be pretty good if this dumbass hasn't already ruined him. If I were a coach at ISU I'd be driving up there to kick the shit out this asshole.

If this kid threw 167 pitches in one game, then he probably sucks and should quit baseball.

Max off 115 pitches. 95 at the freshman and sophomore level. Good work.

I also threw no pitches in high school and still needed shoulder surgery.

i think this is a good move. 95 pitches for freshman and sophomores seems right, but they had better have good, deep stables of pitching. the highest level i have ever coached was 8th grade and we had a max pitch count where a kid couldnt start an inning if he had more than 75 pitches with a cap at 90 total, and 90 pitches doesn't go as far as you think at that level! on top of that, if they pitched in the 75+ range they required 4 days before they could pitch again. my last year was the first year they instituted that rule, and with our schedule of games we had kids pitching who NEVER wold have been out there without the count. not saying that is a bad thing at all (it is actually good to get more kids the opportunity), but it led to some bad baseball games in those weeks where we had 3 or 4 games.

This rule will force a coach to actually coach rather than riding 1 or 2 guys the entire season and maybe they'll stumble into a guy or 2 who can pitch who wouldn't have had an opportunity before.
