I would understand this better if they converted every grade to a 0-4 system the way grade point averages work. That's what they're trying to accomplish, but the scale is kind of wrong.

But hte larger question is: does the kid who tries but is just struggling and really cannot pass a particular homework assignment or test deserve the same fate as the kid who doesn't bother showing up.

Make an A 5 points, then BCDF 4,3,2,1. No show counts 0.

Then a perfect score and a no-show comes out to 2.5, which is a C-, while a perfect score and an F comes out to 3 which is a C.

At least this way the kid who tries gets a little bit of a bump.

This is the same reason why house leagues suck for baseball and why travel leagues should be abolished.

I'm a little bias. If my kid is a good student I don't believe they should be held back because it takes half the class longer to understand things.

As long as we allow private schools to exist we should allow the magnet schools or whatever they are called.

Nice to see he is in favor of meritocracy. If we can just get rid of those racial quotas.

Magnet schools are just public versions of private schools bringing more fairness to the inherent unfairness of rich people being able to send their kids elsewhere.

Now you're cooking with grease. I actually don't have a problem with it either as long as they don't play dumb when it comes to lackluster results. You could put John Dewey, Horace Mann and any any other gurus combined with every golden apple winner in the country in a number of poor performing schools and it is not going to make much difference. There is a reason for that academic engineering exists and the results are exactly as they were intended to be.

Their has been a paradigm shift where teachers now receive a lion's share of the blame for failing schools. People like Emanuel have perpetuated this myth too.

The unfairness is already there. Rich parents can send their kids to a private school. This at least gives the non-rich a chance to do the same.

If you are against magnet schools for the same reason you should be against private schools.

this goes deeper than racial discrimination now. it's got its own causes, a few generations removed from the original cause. it's a fozzy of a bear of a problem.

But his kids will take the place a deserving poor smart kid should get when Bernsie can clearly afford a private school.

I had driver's ed at Bogan.

My sister went to Hubbard in the early-to-mid 70s. I don't know if it had a reputation as an outstanding school back then but I knew a few people who went there when I was in HS in the mid-to-late 80s and it didn't seem...challenging.
