I can. You let your ace finish them.

I can see both sides. Your closer should be able to finish that one. If he can't it's not really the manager's fault. But the starter had a one-hitter going and had only thrown 100 pitches. I've seen Ventura leave Sale in when he was struggling and had thrown more pitches. It's like there's no consistent philosophy or methodology. If you're going to manage by "feel" it had better work out more often than not. But the manager may also know things about his players that the goof in the grandstand or sitting in front of his TV does not. Ventura should have been fired at some point last season. Not because a shitty team is his fault but simply because you can't just manage shitty teams indefinitely without getting whacked.

Ventura seems to double down on bad moves too.

Robertson had not pitched in 12 days. Now part of that is the Sox sucking. Part of that is Ventura failing to get him into a game. You mean to tell me Ventura couldnt give Robertson the ball in a meaningless 8th inning Friday or Sunday against the Angels?

I think he was hurt. Probably still is.

Then Robin is stupid for using him, and the Organzation is even dumber for not putting him on the DL.

So Sale put two guys on in the 7th and two guys on in the 8th? He wasn't exactly dealing late in the game.

This was Robertson's fault.

Exactly. This is all on Robertson. We do not know what Sale told Robin as well. Maybe he told him he was done? If you are the closer and you got a 3 run lead, you finish the deal.

I would put the blame on R.Hahn for spending all that money on a sub-par "closer." I said when they signed him White Sox fans would regret it and it looks like they do.

Robin didn't get another reliever up in the pen when his closer promptly allowed two baserunners in the 9th and then grooved a fastball for a single to score one of them. The belt-high fastball to a power-hitting left-handed pinch hitter is on Robertson, as is the loss, but let's instead say he walked him or surrendered a double, now there are runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs in a 1-run ballgame, and your closer on the mound is the reason it is a 1-run ballgame, and you've got nobody in warming in the pen to relieve a guy on the verge of blowing another save.

Starting to get somebody warm while Cooper visits the mound after the Seager single hurts nobody, and gives you an option that might stop the bleeding if Robertson lets Lind get on. Not only is Robin a poor in-game manager, he is also poor at preparing for situations that might arise with a reliever (or starter) imploding on the mound late(r) in games. The loss isn't on Robin, but you can see he wasn't prepared for whatever happened should Robertson not retire Lind, other than to just let Robertson eat it.

If you take your closer out of a save situation...he isn't your closer anymore. If that is what you wanted Robin to do...that is fine...but now you've gutted Robertson's trade value and left a void in your bullpen to be filled by whom?

No, I wanted Robin to be prepared to pull Robertson after Lind, should that PA not have ended the game in either an out or HR, when it would have been clear that Robertson is not effective. If Robertson is the kind of mental midget that his confidence as a "closer" would be destroyed by being pulled before he could blow a save, then too bad. And trade value? Is Robin managing to win games or preserve the trade value of a team which has publicly stated it (stupidly) wants to buy at the deadline?

I agree with your premise, but it seems to be a basic MLB-wide philosophy that your closer is your "last man" and once he's in you win or die with him. It's quite rare for a manager to pull his closer from a game.

My issue with Ventura last night was running into another out in the top of the 9th. If he doesn't send Garcia, he probably scores on the base hit from Shuck, and the error on the left fielder.

Quintana is pitching. Probably a 2-1 loss.

This is the career of the suddenly "great" Wade Miley, currently 3-hitting the Sox through 5:

Image

Exactly 2 seasons in his career have featured above-average league-adjusted FIP, the other 3 have been painfully below average.

It's good Quintana didn't give up MANY runs. He's only won 1 game that he gave up more than 1 run so we knew his margin of error was small.

I didn't appreciate until this series how big of a boy Dae-Ho Lee is.

 I guess that didn't exactly work out the way you thought it would. Miley and Quintana are both .500 pitchers. Something had to give.

What do you mean, was he not 3-hitting the Sox through 5 innings? Is 1-run through 5 against the likes of Wade Miley not the least embarrassing to a team that still fancies itself "in the hunt"? I don't get your insinuation here.
