(July 20, 2016) CHICAGO, IL - The Chicago Cubs have announced that the organization is currently in "win now mode" and is no longer prioritizing stockpiling young talent. The team believes that recent performance by the current 25-man roster, combined with last year's surprise NLCS appearance, has led to what should be perennial contender. "We feel very comfortable with our current situation, and we expect absolute progress in both our short term and long term goals," said Jed Hoyer while meeting the press before Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Mets. "While we always consider each and every move with all goals in mind, we assure Cubs fans nationwide that the idea of acquiring a major piece to help win a World Series at the cost of a player that could maybe help in the future is an option. We brought the organization into this situation so that we may have these options and this flexibility." At 57-37 and with a 7.5 game lead over the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals, the Chicago Cubs may have their best chance at bringing a World Series title to Chicago's North Side since 2003 -- the ill-reputed season that most Cubs' fans would rather not discuss.

And the problem is? Discuss.

No bullpen, no ace, offense is feast or famine.

They're not good enough to win it all this season but they're heading in the right direction.

I don't see Jed saying in his comments that the Cubs are in win-now mode and no longer prioritizing stockpiling young talent.

Putting the date part of the dateline in parenthesis was a pretty good first clue.

In order to compete for the World series they will need a closer and one more bullpen arm and that's the minimum. Ideally they need one more bat and starting pitcher too. A lot of holes to fill.

they need to dummy proof this team. Two lockdown bullpen guys minimum. There's no starters out there that I really want but I still don't trust Lackey. Offensively, if everyone is healthy I think you make no major moves there.

I'd still look into acquiring Gray or Archer...their value might be at the lowest point and both can be important pieces over the next few years.

Hammel would be the odd man out.

I have to be honest. I don't trust any of the starters in a playoff situation. They out-slugged a beaten-up Cardinals team last year. To be honest, I'm not going to be surprised if the Cardinals catch them in the division race. They have scored the second most runs after Boston in the league. I also think the Cardinals rotation is better than the Cubs. But maybe I'm just being overly pessimistic.

There is no way that this year the Cards rotation is better.

not this year. But the Cards have tons of good arms in their system. They're good for a while on pitching. Garcia is gone for sure.

That is why I was specific in saying this year. They do have some good arms coming. Alex Reyes looks to be a stud. I am curious to see if they make any moves at the deadline and have to give up any arms.
