Great series of posts people. Not what was anticipated based on the thread title. Working a red faced Majerus plus backstory into a Cub trade is impressive.

You were just waiting to use that, weren't you?

I was only looking for 'sew buttons'.

You two are sick fucks.

Honestly no ... it was a completely reflexive thought after (during) reading your post. It's an exceedingly unmarketable skill, of which I have many, none of which either enrich my life or significantly hasten my demise.

Apparently Torres has posted a couple sad emojis on his twitter or instagram or whatever shit it is to indicate his imminent departure from wherever the hell he is/was.

Good enough for me.

Now Doc, that I was waiting to use.

Cubs reportedly to send 4 players to Yanks including Torres and Warren. Candelario not to be included.

Okay.

So allegedly Chapman goes with the 'does Wayne Brady gotta choke a bitch' routine on his gf then goes out to the garage to fire off his gun (not a euphemism). I don't remember the story because, well, I'm not some wacko and have other things to occupy my pea brain.

So a very cursory internet search seems to indicate that the incident was, at least on the surface, dropped b/c of lack of evidence. Okay, I've heard that song before ... maybe he did and she's an enabler, maybe she's scared to say anything, maybe she's a liar, or who knows what else.

I see here on SI the statement that, "... Police also found no evidence of physical injuries. ..." Now, I'm no forensic expert but I nevertheless have a bit of a hard time thinking that if this guy, scrawny or not, choked her that he'd leave some tell-tale marks or bruising or whatever. Well, as we just read, none were present. Over at TMZ the even have pictures of what, to my untrained eyes, seems to demonstrate the aforementioned lack of evidence.

So why did Manfred suspend him for 30 days? I don't know. PR?

What I do know is that I'm just not innerested in pretending that lack of evidence somehow magically means clear evidence b/c some people can't accept that maybe things weren't as awful as they were alleged to be. Further, I'm not innerested in pretending that we live in the 1960s and everyone thinks these guys are all tip-top citizens (which they never were, there just wasn't the proliferation of stories, not to mention they would've been too outrageous to publicly tell ... you don't do that in polite company of course). These same people who pillory these folks (not Hope Solo and her flappy beef curtains though, as an aside) from afar wouldn't, I suspect, get off their couch to phone the cops if they saw the old man giving the wife what-for out their kitchen window because then they might have to actually get involved up close and personal.

Look, if the guy did smack his gf around - and maybe he did, I don't know - that's deplorable and hopefully he'll get his someday for it. All I do know for certain at this point is he throws 100+ because I don't spend my day hoping I can get on the internet and feel like I'm doing something by being some Eeyore SJW prairie pissant that's taking some stand by blubbering about other folks' business and declaring reality based on a narrative that they alone have decided is 'real' regardless of whether it can be proven, never mind the cases where it's outright fabricated, hoping some guy isn't on "my" baseball team trying to help them win a World Series.

As to Julie specifically, if her modus operandi is to decry the evils of men everywhere, why did she go from being a public defender to being a 'poor me' Twitter blatherer as well as an objectively shitty reader of her (alleged) native tongue for a/the top Chicago sports radio station - a medium entirely predicated on the skill of ... wait for it ... READING? How does that help anyone but herself (even that's dubious)? I believe I'll take, 'Thing That Make Me Feel Self-Important' for $800, Alex.

I'd be hesitant to offer a full package headlined by Torres unless you get the extension. But you figure out a way to make this trade work. Torres might be great in the majors...but he won't be great in the majors in 2016, 2017 or 2018...and right now those seasons come first.

And he might be Ryan Flaherty. Don't care. They're not trading anything demonstrably real. Of course we'd like a better value, but for all we know it might be the greatest value trade in MLB history ... which I know you get and are at least mostly on board with.

On top of all that, does the guy ever get redemption by being punished and not performing the act again?

Torres, Warren, McKinney, and 1 other player. There has to be a extension, that's a lot for a couple months.

How dare you suggest that a guy can ever be redeemed by serving his punishment for something he might not have even done ... the scarlet letters of SJW supposition are branded upon him forever.

You give to get.

The early discussions I read at several places were ridiculous, like Chapman didn't have premium value on the trade market.

We'll see how this shakes out but the Cubs may be giving up more value with this deal than the gasped at proposal for Schwarber.

and then, in a vacuum, the same people will support programs for ex cons (correctly in my opinion but completely inconsistently with how they treat their athletes)

I didn't get that either. If I've got three nice cars, just because I can't drive them all at the same time doesn't mean I'm not asking full price for them.

Yup.

Though if Theo goes to the Yankees next year Cubbie Nation may be mad.

If there's no extension with Chapman, then he will have tremendous leverage over the Cubs in free agent negotiations. I wouldn't do this deal. I don't like the optics of a guy with personal life issues in the recent past. I don't like the lack of team control. Not for this price.

You're getting a one inning pitcher, so the chance that he is the difference in winning the World Series seems low.

Spiegs is fully on board with the idea that the Chapman trade "sullying the experience" of a potential Cubs WS victory.

Jeff Passan is as well.

Thank goodness these folks are our appointed moral leaders so that we don't have to lose our way to things like facts or logical reasoning or examination of same.

Passan is all over the place on this one.

He first says they gave up a TON to get a rental player. Then he goes on to say that the shine has fallen off McKinney a lot in the last year and Warren has no real role on the team.

That opinion is shit. You do whatever to win, and he's a once in the generation talent. The past is the past, move on. Bernstein, Porky, Julie, or anyone else with that shit opinion can go enjoy the Sox or some other team that sucks.

The Cubs are expected to be above the Yankees from a moral perspective? What a crock.

As for a reliever "not making much of a difference," that's also ludicrous. The Cubs will be in the playoffs, period. At that point, having Chapman to shorten the games will prove invaluable. I can't wait until he hits 107 mph in the WS.

So I am assuming now they got Strop in the 7th, Rondon in the 8th, and Chapman in the 9th?

Pretty solid.

this is what gets me. He's a one inning pitcher. But he effects the whole bullpen! Your ninth inning guy moves to the eighth, eighth to seventh, and your suckfest guy you only break glass in case of emergency for goes bye bye.

As a mostly meaningless but nevertheless fun fact, the current Cardinals are 2-38 against Chapman w/ 22 Ks, an 0.053 BA, and OPS of 0.287. :D
