Everybody should have AAA. It pays for itself every year.

How much does AAA cost these days?

I pay $93 a year for Plus (gold card).

always wondered who the weirdos were who use those off-airport parking services

only in the last year have i discovered the ease and convenience of being able to drive your own vehicle to the airport and not have to pay too too much to leave it there AND having car-trunk-side shuttle that saves having to wrestle luggage around the parking structure up closer to the terminals. where i used to always park. if i didn't blue line to orange line it.

i've used it every flight since; it's one of the few relatively easy/painless things about air travel these days.
i used them at Christmas last year since they took reservations and I was afraid the MDW lot would be full. Worked as you stated but the drawback was that there had been an ice storm and my windshield had an inch of ice on it when we were dropped off. Another off site is Airways. They start your car for you and bring it to the office area...which helps in Winter. However, they are on the wrong side of the tracks (so to speak) and the trains can really screw with your timing.

My mom called AAA for a tow a couple years ago. It took them 36 hours to get it done.

I waited one hour both times I called for a tow truck.

AAA often hires the lowest tow companies on the totem pole. My father in law waited an entire day to get some help.

is there any other kind of tow-truck operator? When you break down on the road, you're getting the closest geographic tow truck provider, regardless of whether you use AAA or Flo or the Lizard or State Farm or pay yourself.

I had the tow rider on my State Farm auto policy. It sucked ass. I had to pay first and then submit for reimbursement and they only reimbursed for a couple miles.
