I would like the Cubs to have swept the Sox this week, but obviously that didn't happen, but I am much more excited about having a team that is going to be in the playoff picture rather than one that is going to be dead on the side of the road. Hopefully this late hot stretch near the trade deadline has the Sox hold onto all their players like they did with Smardz last year.

so, are the Pirates bad? Are the Cards bad? They're both below the Cubs. Philly and Atlanta are in the same division...are the Nationals mediocre? Mets? SD and Arizona are in the same division. Is San Fran mediocre? Is Baltimore the best team in the league because they're in the East?

My question had nothing to do with NL vs. AL.

Every team that has a good record in baseball plays bums.

You guys act like the Cubs are the only team playing bad teams. The Giants do. The nationals do. The Indians do. THe Orioles do. They all play bums.

far be it from me to defend the Cubs this season. I haven't liked a lot of what I've seen this season, you can find my comments all over the board. But if you think they play in the worst division in baseball, I'll argue with you. As bad as they can play, if they get into the playoffs they have a random chance of winning it. This is coming from a guy who irrationally doesn't think they have a chance in the playoffs. I'm just trying to be rational here.

We just happen to be discussing the Cubs as this is a Chicago message board. If you're a good team in the NL you have more soft games than a good team in the AL right now.

I'm not the kind of guy who holds a team's quality of competition against them. I'm aware that playing the Reds so many times a season helps but other than that I don't put much more thought into it.

It's the simple fact that outside of a hot month to start the season that this team has been around .500 since then and what I see when I watch the games (the long time guy eye test) that leads me to claiming this team is mediocre.

A great team doesn't make me want to put my fist through my TV as much as this team does.

I can live with a slump/rough stretch here and there but its been 2-3 months. Get it going again because I'm beyond annoyed at this point.

By certain measures the Cubs are a great team. They have a top offense and a top pitching staff. But baseball isn't a game of "domination". The difference between the best team and the worst isn't that large.
