Pleasantly surprised that Joe Nathan's stuff seems to be decent I think he might stick in the pen down the stretch.

 I would like the Cubs to have swept the Sox this week, but obviously that didn't happen, but I am much more excited about having a team that is going to be in the playoff picture rather than one that is going to be dead on the side of the road. Hopefully this late hot stretch near the trade deadline has the Sox hold onto all their players like they did with Smardz last year.

If they played in some other divisions they wouldn't get to crush the Reds so many times. Look up the percentage of Cub home runs that have come off Reds pitching. The number may shake your confidence somewhat seeing as how they won't be facing Cincinnati in October.

Excluding the teams that have no shot at the playoffs (Cin, Mil, Phi, Angels, Ariz, SD, Atl), the mighty, mighty Coo are 28-26, with a +22 run differential.

I'm not sure what we're arguing. Are we arguing that the Cubs are currently mediocre? Are we arguing that when the playoffs start, that they couldn't get to the world series? What is your argument?

Every team has the same chance in the playoffs? Really?

I've been arguing this for some time. You choose now to have this argument? I've said repeatedly I don't like the Cubs chances in the playoffs. But to be fair, they could get to the world series.

I've never said "the playoffs are a crapshoot" (except maybe to ridicule the idea). Sure, a seven game series has more randomness than a 162 game season. It's a game of time and repetition. But all teams aren't equal and most of the time the better one will win the seven game or the four game or the three game series.

let's quantify this. What is "most of the time?"

 More than half.

I'd say that saying "It's ok, our team is in the playoff picture" isn't really going to get Sox fans worked up. Congratulations on being excited about probably making the playoffs.

I'm not arguing anything, just presenting facts to back up JORR's claim that the Cubs have gotten phat off of some bums.

Is there a team in baseball that has a good record that does not get to play bad teams?

so, are the Pirates bad? Are the Cards bad? They're both below the Cubs. Philly and Atlanta are in the same division...are the Nationals mediocre? Mets? SD and Arizona are in the same division. Is San Fran mediocre? Is Baltimore the best team in the league because they're in the East?

Are you really going to argue that the NL is equal to the AL? The disparity between the leagues is as large as it's ever been. What is the head-to-head record right now? Where is THE INQUISITOR when we really need him?

My question had nothing to do with NL vs. AL.

Every team that has a good record in baseball plays bums.

You guys act like the Cubs are the only team playing bad teams. The Giants do. The nationals do. The Indians do. THe Orioles do. They all play bums.

far be it from me to defend the Cubs this season. I haven't liked a lot of what I've seen this season, you can find my comments all over the board. But if you think they play in the worst division in baseball, I'll argue with you. As bad as they can play, if they get into the playoffs they have a random chance of winning it. This is coming from a guy who irrationally doesn't think they have a chance in the playoffs. I'm just trying to be rational here.

We just happen to be discussing the Cubs as this is a Chicago message board. If you're a good team in the NL you have more soft games than a good team in the AL right now.

I'm not the kind of guy who holds a team's quality of competition against them. I'm aware that playing the Reds so many times a season helps but other than that I don't put much more thought into it.

It's the simple fact that outside of a hot month to start the season that this team has been around .500 since then and what I see when I watch the games (the long time guy eye test) that leads me to claiming this team is mediocre.

A great team doesn't make me want to put my fist through my TV as much as this team does.

I can live with a slump/rough stretch here and there but its been 2-3 months. Get it going again because I'm beyond annoyed at this point.

By certain measures the Cubs are a great team. They have a top offense and a top pitching staff. But baseball isn't a game of "domination". The difference between the best team and the worst isn't that large.

Which is why it's dumb to bet big favorites in baseball. The worst teams win 40% of the time.

Sounds the same for the Sox when the win or lose the Cup.

I like how you're recreating history. You want to see the BP Cup / Crosstown threads for that year?

http://www.chicagofanatics.com/viewtopi ... 6&start=30

viewtopic.php?f=33&t=79411&start=0

ES was really the only one even posting about it in any quantity. And the Cubs swept all four against the White Sox.

You think if we were going to get all "chippy" about it, it would have been then.

You're not half as smart as you think you are.
