It wasn't just a few small investors. There were millions of people investing in real estate if you factor in the " flippers". It also doesn't factor in the people that were using their home as an atm/credit card

A guy in my office was bidding on a short sale in Sleepy Hollow after the crisis hit. I pointed him to the Kane County Recorder's website where they catalog all mortgages in a free to use database. We decided to dig in on what went wrong for the sellers.

The property was located on Deer lane. The owner had taken out a $475,000 zero interest loan at 12% interest. That equates to nearly $60,000 per year in interest or $4,829a month. Now I don't know about you, but nearly $5,000 in interest a month can probably be reasonably afforded by less than 1% of the population. The borrower took out the loan in August 2006 and got the foreclosure notice in August 2007. I surmised that he never made even one payment and probably never intended to. I laughed when seeing that a Lehman Brothers entity was the lender.

We started exploring other foreclosures in Kane County and found so many interesting stories. Just go to the recorders site and look up anything with an "LP" recording code. Those are your foreclosures.

That's how I purchased my crib. Previous "owner" purchased it never paid a mortgage and walked away before they came for the keys. I got it on foreclosure for less than half of what she paid. She took a few appliances and rolled out in the middle of the night. It was in 06 or 07.
