I guess Trump's "MANY people are saying..." is becoming a meme. They had a special on CNN about it. Yes, you read that right.

That's what "The Media" does all the time.

"Critics say" "People are saying..."

Whatever.

If you are worried about an uneducated, unskilled, illiterate immigrant taking your job, then you probably suck at your job.

Maybe so, maybe not. If you have to pay Juan, or somebody else, to come back and fix his mistakes, then what did you save?

Smart business owners know that good employees are worth the money. How are you helping yourself by hiring a guy for half of what I get, if he doesn't know what the fuck he is doing?

If you built a house, and hired me to do your HVAC, it will be done right the first time. Or you could hire Juan for less money, and hope he does it correctly.

Well, if they're not paying taxes and aren't regulated in any way, that's impossible to compete with. I gotta Mexican dude that mows my lawn for twenty bucks. They do the whole block. Can't beat that price, and he does great work. I'm sure he's not paying taxes or anything, though.

Yes, it is. Why would you assume Juan is inferior to you? I'd truly like to know.

Juan isn't capable of skilled labor, according to Chus.

I went to school, learned the trade on the job, and now have 24 years of experience. I will do a better job than a guy who just crossed the border illegally.

The next time you need home renovations, you should hire an illegal immigrant, and save a few bucks. He will probably do a great job for you.

I can only speak to my experiences. It seems to me that most illegal immigrants aren't taking skilled jobs from Americans. They mow lawns and wash dishes.

Are you saying Juan didn't get training south of the border? Are you saying Juan isn't as capable as you? Juan may just have more experience than you.

You may want to change your profession. You could make a great deal of money painting with that broad brush.
Juan could probably do it cheaper and better than you, however.

I think we've seen that in MANY cases money trumps all. You may be great at what you do but MANY business owners believe that they can teach Juan how to be average at your job and pay him 1/5 of what you make. Juan will take it because he needs the work and would make far less at home. Then they'll find people offering to do it for less than Juan.

Additionally, large companies with plenty of revenue and access to capital can afford to recruit and hire "talent" as a sort of investment. My company struggles mightily to find talent, even for jobs that don't seem to require that much skill.

But the small businesses that are constantly trying to turn over money and meet payroll probably can't afford to have a long-term view. They have to hire people who are skilled enough, work cheaply, and can start on Monday.

Do you think the people sneaking over the border are leaving a great life with a great job? Or are they living in poverty, and spending their life's savings, and taking many risks, to get to this country?

Education isn't a priority in Mexico, so I can say with confidence that my 24 years of experience trumps a guy who never attended school. Or maybe you just look down on what I do?

That's just dumb. You have really lost your fastball.

Like I said, the next time you need home renovations, you should hire an illegal immigrant. I'm sure everything will be fine.

I've made that argument in technology for years, but as Nas said, money talks. MANY businesses would rather pay $25 an hour to a guy from India who just got out of Habib's Technical College of Calcutta rather than an expert at $100 an hour, as long as there is at least one expert still there to project manage (re: babysit) him. That's how a lot of websites and software gets built. I usually joke that I am the equivalent of four Indians.

The difference between the Indians and immigrants is that your immigrant isn't trying to move up the chain. Its the same problem with US workers. Sure, I can hire a kid out of high school to flip burgers, but he is going to eventually want a pay raise and be a store manager. I can hire an immigrant worker and have someone work with him / babysit him and he is likely not going to ask for more money or a higher position.
