Yeah, it amazes me that citizens are worried about vegetable pickers and landscapers taking their jobs and holding down wages.

I do my own landscaping, and I have made friends with my neighbors' landscapers. They tell me I do a nice job on my yard. They cut three yards in the time it takes me to do mine, but they have those fancy stand up riders. Great guys. They even helped me remove unwanted big screen tv's, and I gave them all our old baseball equipment. They say they put it out at their church for needy people to take. Win win.

I welcome hard working, freedom loving (and America loving) immigrants. They have energy and culture to our homogenized society. They just want a better life for their family.

You're completely and totally missing the point of this whole discussion. No one is saying or has said that some homeless Mexican person is going to take an IT or management position. You have been corrected multiple times, redirected multiple times and told this multiple times and yet you keep on going. Participate in the discussion or start a new thread and talk to yourself.

Is there a line or job level where we should be concerned? Drywallers, tapers and painters? I imagine a bunch of legal Chicagoans would do that job if they could get it. Food service and retail? Driving careers as some states give licenses? I imagine a bunch of legal Chicagoans would do that job if they could get it.

When I was in LA a little bit ago there was a complete economy outside of Home Depot. We made several trips during our stay at various times of day as our hosts had a new home to do things on. There were no less than 40 Latin men in small groups offering quite aggressively offering to do about any job for dirt cheap. Is that not affecting Chus' HVAc all the way to the contractor businesses?

That is too bad. I thought we had discussed it nicely. Anyway, not much more to say really. It is a big issue and complex. Bottom line for me as far as the lower end of skilled people go is I would like some new system getting these folks on the books. Tax and otherwise.

Exactly. It's also an artificial shortage created by the higher ups at these companies so they can cut costs and get bigger bonuses with government approval since all of these workers have to be granted access by our government.

Since Chus mentioned how these workers should just stop sucking at their jobs so much I'll use an example that would be close to his situation. Let's say he is a high paid welder(I have no idea if he is or not). His company is currently employing enough welders to get all of their jobs done and done well. However, the CEO suddenly says that they simply cannot find good welders even though they get many resumes for qualified people and that they need to be able to import workers from other countries. The government says "Oh no, this is terrible, we will help you" and they grant them four workers. These workers also just so happen to be able to work for 4x less with no leverage because the company can send them back home. They are not as good as the current welders but that solution is simple. You "promote" Chus as team leader and then his job is to sit there all day and tell them what work they did sucked so they have to redo it or they just let it go down to the minimum standards. They then "lay off" two coworkers because suddenly they don't have enough work. So, they've gone from three American born workers who were getting the job done to one American born worker and four foreign workers who combined make what one American worker does meaning they have effectively saved one American level salary and our government basically says "Cool, glad we could help".

I'm going to guess the welders union wouldn't say "Well, get better at your job". There are levels in any work where you can't perform well enough to overcome someone who is willing to work for so much less. We all think we are good at our jobs but realistically everyone is replaceable. The key is to have our government stop giving incentives to our companies to do so.

This is where the discussion is going? Hypothetical situations that would never happen?

Union companies aren't taking applications from guys off the street. Your premise is flawed from the start.

That is exactly what is happening in the tech industry. That is not hypothetical. That is the discussion here.

It is a great and relevant discussion to have. I love all the counter points here. I put enough out there on immigration and free trade. Up to each person to decide.

It was an analogy. It was to show the flaw in your thinking by using a different set of conditions that result in different results.

Why wouldn't that happen with union welders? Shouldn't the union say "Don't suck at your job" if it did?

That is the point of the analogy. The union would stop that practice before it started.

Union welding companies aren't hiring guys off the street. They are hiring skilled union workers. Surely you know this.

It wouldn't happen in the first place. It's a deeply flawed analogy.

Newly released Clinton emails shed light on relationship between State Dept. and Clinton Foundation

http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/09/politics/hillary-clinton-emails-judicial-watch/

Quote:
In one instance, top Clinton Foundation official Doug Band lobbied Clinton aides for a job for someone else in the State Department. In the email, Band tells Hillary Clinton's former aides at the department -- Cheryl Mills and Huma Abedin -- that it is "important to take care of (redacted)." Band is reassured by Abedin that "Personnel has been sending him options."

http://nypost.com/2016/08/09/want-a-job-give-to-the-clinton-foundation-right-away/

Quote:
That same year, he pushed for State to give high-level access to Clinton Foundation donor Gilbert Chagoury, a Lebanese-Nigerian billionaire. Noting that Chagoury is a “key guy there [in Lebanon] and to us,” he tells Mills and Abedin to connect the donor with State’s “substance person” on Lebanon.

Abedin supplies the name: “its jeff feltman,” the US ambassador to Lebanon and later assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs. And, she says, “Ill talk to jeff.”

Band doesn’t let go: “Better if you call him. Now preferable. This is very important. He’s awake I’m sure.”

Chagoury has a murky past: In a 2000 plea deal on Swiss money-laundering charges, he repaid $66 million to the Nigerian government. But, hey, he also gave at least $1 million to the foundation and pledged a cool $1 billion to the Clinton Global Initiative.

The e-mails show other “employment opportunities”: Big-time Clinton fundraiser Lana Moresky asked Clinton to arrange another hire at State. The secretary told Abedin to follow up and “help” the applicant — and to “let me know” how the job hunt ended.

Why do you hate Juan?

My initial post was laughing at Americans whining about Mexicans stealing their jobs, but somehow you spin it into I hate Mexicans. You really are an idiot.

You are Tom Seaver with the White Sox. I saw that, so I guess I can comment on it. Grab some bench.

Let us know when you hire some illegals to work on your house.

You called me an idiot. I don't think you really mean that. You're just frustrated. I understand.

When did you become a xenophobe?

You don't seem to understand what that word means. You should take an English class with bigfan.

I'm pretty sure I know the meaning.

You were the one who first brought up the name Juan.

Why do you think you're better than Juan?

Not surprised you'd pick a gif of a white pitcher striking out a Latin American.

My wife's boss at her last job once told me that he drank gin martinis at lunch, instead of vodka martinis. This way, clients/coworkers would know that he is drunk, not stupid.

I guess I am saying stick with the gin.

The future of food is likely something like this--but in a distributed system. Meaning that they'll be localized, either to a neighborhood/coop/other iteration of a population center, or even to an individual home:

Lively range of opinions and viewpoints in the comments. All the way from Duke "Don't paint them black! They won't show up to work in the morning!" to Trump: "That is awesome news. Now we can send the illegal aliens back to Mexico and use robots who won't leech off of welfare, EBT/SNAP, commit violent crimes, etc! Happy days!"

Will the robots have calves the size of cantaloupes, as Rep. Steve King suggests?
