I predict that the benches clear at least once this series as the cardinals try to manufacture some type of edge or whatever you'd like to call it. We will see. Hopefully no silly injuries.

Sini, do you honestly think Heyward would ever opt out of this deal? He would have to put up some monster numbers to even approach this contract with someone else. Or he would have to have an unbelievably guilty conscience.

welp, i'll say that i certainly think it's possible that he eventually gets around to putting up #s akin to his eventual ~.280/15/75/10+ last year and then when he gets to his 2 opt outs after 3/4 years it's entirely possible that if he determines he's able to get someone to (stupidly?) give him another ~5-8 year contract which might end up technically having a lower AAV but might end up being a little bit more overall $$$ in the end.

honestly i don't know how these opt outs en masse will play out all across baseball (especially in a case like cespedes where IIRC i think he has opt-outs after every season of his ~2-3 year deal) cuz they seem to be a fairly new thing to be popping up as early and often as they're popping up nowadays. yeah there were always some opt-outs, most often in big huge ginormous a-rod type contracts, but i don't think we've ever had a situation like this last offseason where it seems like everybody and their mom was getting these opt-outs everywhere which totally befuddles me that teams would be so willing to put out contracts where they take on all the risk and only get "rewarded" if a player actually goes HAM and sticks around to produce at or above the level of $$$ for either the full length of their contract or possibly up until the opt-outs kick in.

personally i'm one to believe that i think many of these execs figure that they can probably "get away with" getting ~1-3 productive years from a bigtime FA and then some ot8her idiot will overpay them so you'll end up getting ~85-100%+ of the value for the AAV of the years you actually have the guy and then they'll sod off to detroit or los angleles of angleheim where some idiot like illitch or moreno will give them something like 8yrs/225mil to lock them up until they're 39-42 years old =D

TLDR = *shrug* aka 'let's just say i wouldn't be too surprised either way"

I'm expecting a split. The rookie on Saturday will probably be a challenge, and somebody else is due for a clunker.

But a split still leaves the Cubs over 10 up. As long as they are 10+ up, Joe can fuck around with matchups, lineups, odd defenses, weird relievers as much as he wants to.

My vote on BCB was a split, as well. You have to throw the records out when these two teams play. But in addition to that, the Cardinals are currently winning the season series...and they are still an above .500 team / wildcard contender. This isn't the Reds.

That surprised me, I thought we kinda kicked the shit out of STL this year n last..I think we split ..which is just fine IMO... We been hot .. 8 or 9 str8 n and best record in mlb..11 game lead...they gain no ground this series ..I still want jhey in the 8 spot.

Yeah, but the Cards are playing like shit. For real! Base running is atrocious, All 5 starters take turns stinking up the joint, Matheny continues to astound with his utter stupidity in all facets of the game.

You guys are stacked and clearly the best team in the bigs at this point.

Oh! Thanks to Nas for giving me the heads up on the site switch.

Inexplicably, he's only running a -0.2 oWaR ... his dWaR is at 1.4 ... still, I'd prefer they remove his leg and let Schwarber try it out for a month or two.

Keeping him at 2 for so long was a big enough embarrassment, and you know the fans at Wrigley were destroying his confidence when he'd be at bat or fielding.

Martinez made Bryant look like a little leaguer on that at bat.

The games against the Cards are always frustrating. Nothing ever goes the way you think it should.
