Nobody knows where LaStella is. I talked with Cubs AAA manager today in Omaha. He didn't report in the required 72 hours.

I imagine little Tommy is cruising down the interstate somewhere bumping Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons greatest hits while cursing the name of Chris Coghlan.

That's disappointing. He's more valuable than Coghlan.

In fairness, Coghlan did make a hell of catch out there last night to preserve the lead.

That being said, I'll take LaStella over him any day of the week.

Tommy La Stella has a little extra time to travel to Des Moines.

Five days after the Chicago Cubs sent La Stella to the minors, the infielder had yet to officially report.

La Stella, who was optioned to the Iowa Cubs on July 29, had not joined the team when it began an eight-game homestand at Principal Park Wednesday.

The infielder had 72 hours to report to the minors after being sent down. His 72-hour window has already expired but he was given more time.

According to a spokesperson for the Chicago Cubs, La Stella was granted extra time to report due to personal reasons. Iowa manager Marty Pevey said he had no information on when La Stella would report.

The Cubs sent La Stella to the minors when outfielder Chris Coghlan was activated from the disabled list. La Stella became the odd man out and was reportedly unhappy with the demotion. Chicago manager Joe Maddon was asked how La Stella took the news.

“Not well,” Maddon said according to the Chicago Tribune. “And he shouldn’t take it well, honestly. It’s an usual moment we’re in right now when we have so many guys. These are hard decisions. Guys are not going to like them. It’s just a part of the rules and how they are constructed in our game that forces you into difficult moments.”

La Stella hit .295 (31-for-105) with nine doubles, a triple, two home runs, and eight RBIs in 51 games with Chicago this season.

LaStella will be back September 1st at the latest. Quit being such a bitch and get some reps in at Iowa.

Don't blame him. Would of punched Maddon and Theo in the fuckin face if I were him. Coghlan doesn't deserve his spot.

Totally agreed! Coghlin sucks! He loves nothing more in life than killing rallys. He is the Zodiac Killer of rallys.

As long as Lastella is on the playoff roster, that's all that matters.

He can hit good pitching. He's the guy you want pinch hitting in the 9th. Not Coghlan.

This. Cubs don't want to sacrifice roster depth by cutting Coghlan. Which is a smart move given how ouchy everyone on the team has been. Easy as that. LaStella can bitch all he wants, but he barely plays anyways. He will be back for the playoffs and no one will care.

Acting like a bitch could get you trade to a scrub team in August, though, possibly.

Joe Smith getting a 60.7% groundball rate against righties this year, so there's your reason for wanting him.

From the Wire: Cubs Activate Jorge Soler from 15-Day DL, Designate Joe Nathan for Assignment

Joe, we hardly knew ye. You're this year's Rafael Soriano.

But hey, if things go well, you still get a playoff share.

I thought Nathan's stuff looked surprisingly decent in the games I saw him pitch, but what do I know. Apparently Maddon's boner for Coughlin knows no bounds because he's still here....

With no LaStella, you've got to keep Coghlan around just because you're gonna need a left handed bat to pinch hit at some point. I wish that bat were LaStella, but he had options and Coghlan didn't.

It is to bad about Nathan. He did look decent as a 7th inning guy. Maybe he will go unclaimed and go back down, get more work, then come back Sept 1 but doubtful.

LaStella is refusing to go to Iowa which is kind of funny, but he'll be back soon enough.

And Coughlan's days are definitely numbered.

I don't blame Lastella, he's proven too much in the bigs to ride buses in AAA with bums..do the right thing and release Cogz.

There is no reason this team needs 3 catchers right now...especially when one is awful. Put Montero on the DL until the rosters expand in Sept. Rossy and Contreras are catching most of the time now anyways. That at least gets you one spot back.

Tommy LaStella and his HOF level success in 550 career plate appearances is too good to report to AAA?

Get the fuck out of here. Cut him loose.

Yeah the La Stella love is a bit much. Montero is done as well. They will adjust the roster as needed going forward. I somehow missed Clayton Richard being released so what do I know.

The Cubs’ trade for closer Aroldis Chapman looks even more significant after former closer Hector Rondon began feeling triceps “tightness” Sunday in Oakland.

Rondon, who moved to the primary setup role with Chapman’s arrival two weeks ago, has been held out of action the past two games because of the soreness that manager Joe Maddon said is not consider serious.

He’s to be re-evaluated Wednesday.

“Nobody in the training room feels anything is seriously wrong with him,” Maddon said. “We just want to be a little bit careful with him.” Rondon, who twice underwent lengthy recoveries from reconstructive elbow surgery early in his career, said he plans to resume throwing Wednesday.

“It’s not an issue,” he said. “But I feel a little tired and tight too. So I prefer to doing my treadmill [instead of throwing] and see how I feel [Wednesday].” The team needed only eight outs from its bullpen the last two games combined.

Notes: Reliever Justin Grimm was optioned to Iowa as the Cubs activated Jason Hammel from the bereavement list ahead of Wednesday’s start. … The Cubs have agreed to terms on a minor-league contract, pending a medical evaluation, with right-hander Josh Collmenter, the Diamondbacks’ 2015 Opening Day starter who was released over the weekend.

Pedro Strop Diagnosed With Torn Meniscus

Cubs reliever Pedro Strop has been diagnosed with a torn meniscus, the club announced (via Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, Twitter links). He’ll undergo surgery tomorrow, with the expectation that he could be back within four to six weeks.
