Poor Chas has taken quite a bit of collateral damage in this thread.

How is that analogous? What do I have to do with Chas? Are we both followers of some religious doctrine that condones jersey theft?

Islam is a set of ideas. The definition of a Muslim is a person who subscribes to Islam.

Find a closeted Catholic or an atheist then. Slandering a majority because of the actions of a small minority is ridiculous.

When a Muslim says they don't believe the things you say you claim that they aren't "real" Muslims which is just as ridiculous.

Um in another thread wasn't there an article about a football team having to practice at night to comply with Sharia law in Mich? I would say it is already here. As well as the number of honor killings we have here every year.

Well, what do they believe in then? And why are they calling themselves Muslims? The only basis for belonging to any religion is that religion's texts and doctrines. I've never commented on what a "real" Muslim is. I don't care.

The same reason that I consider myself a Christian despite not agreeing with EVERYTHING in the Bible. There are probably more religious people like me in the world than there are true believers.

Huh, interesting. That's the lesson you took out of an article discussing Muslim-Americans embracing American football to such an extent that they are willing to practice it after sundown, to facilitate the religious practices of many of the team members?

Image

Quote:
Steve Stone, the only Jewish pitcher besides Koufax to win a Cy Young award, seems to feel the same way. Growing up near Cleveland in the 1950s and '60s, Stone idolized Koufax. Whenever he could, Stone tried to wear 32, Koufax's number, even after he reached the majors in 1971.

"For me to be mentioned in the same sentence as Sandy Koufax," said Stone, 63, who's now a broadcaster for the Chicago White Sox. "I view it with a great deal of pride. He was my hero."

Stone told me that he took the first day of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur off every season. He said that more than anything, the choice was about honoring his family, which came to the United States from Russia and Hungary.

"If you really believe in your team above all else, it's a really shallow viewpoint on life," Stone said. "Teams come and go, players come and go, I don't believe your religious beliefs come and go."

It's not clear, though, that this attitude has been passed down to today's players. The Nationals' Jason Marquis, who's Jewish, said recently that he would pitch on Friday, even though Yom Kippur begins at sundown. "Your team expects you to do your job and not let your teammates down," he told reporters, "and that's the approach I take."

i read the article on the guy, and watched the video of the incident. then i went to nas's feed and read more of his nonsense.

there is no reason for this guy to be as bitter as he is. he tries to kill himself in a drunken state, almost is killed by police (he wasn't unarmed!!), complains about it, gets millions of dollars for it...and now all he can do is troll Nas's facebook feed all day?

seriously they could make an olympic event out of trolling for him. he'd win the gold like usain bolt.

(i do think he threw the knife at the cops)

The video definitely shows him winding up for the throw...there was nothing else happening there besides an arm cocking ready to throw the knife.

Whether he actually did it or not...that was a dangerous situation for the cops.

I was thinking about this a little more. As I said, I have no interest in establishing who is a "real" member of any group. But there's a larger issue here. I'm someone who loves language and languages. And in order to communicate we have to have commonly accepted definitions. It seems we've moved into a time where each person is entitled to his or her own definition of anything. You can be a Muslim who doesn't follow Islam. A Christian without believing in Christ. A woman who has a penis. A football fanatic who has no intention of ever attending a football game. And on and on and on. When we reach a point where everyone has a different definition for every word it makes communication very difficult. Maybe today I'll declare myself to be a parakeet, argue all day with Rick about it, and see how many of you support me.

I support declaring yourself a parakeet.

There is the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. Religion, be in Catholicism or Islam, SHOULD be a guide on how to live. Its my belief that you can still be a religious follower if you don't follow the letter of the law on all things. In fact, many Catholics I know indeed follow the spirit of the law. Because the media focuses on "radicals", or those who fiercely follow the letter of the law, we think all Muslims are out on a Jihad. Just my two cents.

What is the "spirit of the law"? I know Catholics just like the ones you describe. My whole damn family. They're also football fanatics so that gets in the way of Sunday duty sometimes. What you see as "the spirit of the law" I see as justification for doing whatever one wants rather than what one's supposed beliefs call for.

Fuck, why do I answer. Do I need to go back and read through Canon Law to point things out I think are flawed?

Let's take the big one. As a Catholic, I am supposed to be on a holy mission at all times to spread the word of Christ. I don't come on here preaching to people. I don't preach on Facebook. Instead, I believe I can safely live in the manner that Christ asked. So, I look for the best in people. I believe in supporting one another. That's how I pass the message. Its not what I'm supposed to be doing, but its what I do and I feel I am still following the religion.

I don't want to challenge you on your religious beliefs (or argue with you about if you're actually a football fan), my interest is merely in the words and what they mean. As far as religion is concerned though, I might ask you as a person who believes in God if you feel that the Lord intended his Word to be customized and interpreted for each and every taste.

I live in a neighborhood with a large Orthodox Jewish population. These people are extremely religious. So I'm always amused that they are constantly attempting to circumvent what I find to be the rather obvious intentions of their G_d. For example, on Shabbos there are things a Jew is only supposed to do within the confines of his or her home. To get around that they have invented the eruv. It's as if they think they can get this omnipotent, omniscient being they worship on a technicality. I can almost hear them saying, "Ah, ah, ah, Yahweh, we got you there! This wire technically establishes a house." I'm not surprised because Israel literally means "he who struggles with G_d." But you don't have to believe in God and you don't have to follow any rules at all. It's all optional in the USA. It seems so silly to circumvent rules that one has only imposed upon oneself.

I appreciate it, I just get frustrated arguing with religion. It never ends well.

A similar thing happens with Catholics. Initially, we were supposed to fast for 40 days leading up to Easter. As civilization grew, it switched to not eating meat on Fridays. Now its, pick something to give up for 40 days because people are allergic to fish or don't like fish.

My issue with any religion is that its sole purpose is to guide you on how to live. Then people take it and say, "this is the only one right way to live and if you don't follow this way I'll fucking kill you."

Shakes eats bacon. I think shakes is still an acceptable Jew.

No one knows the Word of God. We have several books that try to set some general guidelines using fables.

As Nas said...use the book to maybe set a group of morals to live by and then use the voice in your head.

I'm not sure what shakes believes. He's culturally Jewish, no doubt.

If no one knows the Word of God, where do the rules come from?

A group of people that helped found the religion and write it into a book. Did you not know that?

Edit: shakes believes that eating bacon is normal.

I do know that. That's why there's no basis for the things most people say they believe. You seem to be arguing with someone else rather than me.

Hardly.

You said that people need to follow their books to the letter as that is the law of their religion.

I'm stating that people can still be members of the religion while understanding exactly how the books were made...and therefore realizing that you don't need to live and die with every sentence.

Murder? Bad. Bacon? Good. Adultery? Bad. Saying goddamnit? Not the end of the world. Pedophilia? Roman Catholics only.
