But they didn't make a phony police report, did they? The cops came looking for them because Lochte lied to his mom and it ended up on TV. Or do I have that wrong?

Obviously. But I was under the impression that they never made a police report. The cops came asking them questions. Is that wrong?

if a cop asks you a question in the course of investigating an alleged crime, a crime you claim involved the police and you provide false information? Different jurisdictions have different rules. Apparently It's a 6 month misdemeanor in Brazil

I'm not defending dumbfuck Lochte. Just pointing out that it seems the Brazilian police created the situation that didn't need to exist. They're probably going to find some athletes who were legitimately robbed in the process and then everyone looks bad.

Lochte was the only one smart enough to get the fuck out of Dodge once the robbery story went viral.

so you're faulting the Brazilian police for following up on Lotche and crew's claim on international television that four men claiming to be Brazilian cops pointed guns at them and robbed them ?

How many lies are told on this board on a daily basis? Should cops look into the ones that may be criminal?

So if the Brazilian swim team were in Chicago one night and they went on the Today show the next morning and claimed "4 guys claiming to be CPD and flashing badges/carrying guns made us get out of the car, lie down on the ground and robbed us at gunpoint" ...the CPD shouldn't take it upon themselves to check out the story, to see if these alleged cop-banditos actually exist and are out there robbing people at gun-point, under the auspices of a CPD badge?

I doubt U.S. authorities would have seized their passports. This was embarrassment on the part of the police. Robberies like the one they lied about aren't unknown in Rio.

Chicago and Rio are not comparable cities. What is plausible in Rio would defy imagination in Chicago.

The CPD runs a secret prison to extrajudicially interrogate people, but it defies imagination that they would rob somebody?

I wouldn't assume that the robbers would actually be cops. There are fake cops all over the place.

Nice of Brazil to finally provide some real reasons to doubt their story.

Find an incident of a cop himself robbing someone or someone pretending to be a cop robbing someone since Y2K.

makes sense to me that you'd wanna talk to the swimmers again, to see what the hell happened and why they are lying.

Quote:
What they said to us, it did not make sense. We cannot investigate a crime if we don't know what happened and what they told us is not correct," Silva Oliverira said. "We want to know why they were in the area where they were robbed and what happened. They did not tell us until later."

"We believe that more information will come out that might make everyone look at what happened in a different light," he continued. "We need to talk to them again to make sure that what they tell us is right. We have a lot more questions."

A statement from the prosecutor said surveillance videos of the athletes on the night of the alleged robbery add to investigators' doubts that the athletes are telling the full story.

"One sees that the supposed victims arrived with their physical and psychological integrity intact, even playing with each other, showing that there wasn't any psychological shock inherent to such alleged violence," the statement says.

Continuing: "The more than calm behavior of the athletes straight after the supposed violence, together with other details present in the inquiry, makes me believe that more investigations should be undertaken into the possible false communication of a crime."

Quote:
There are some things that they told us that are not right and are not the same as what the other people told us," João Silva Oliveira of the Municipal Guard, told PEOPLE on Wednesday.

He explained that their account of the incident lacked basic details that the police would need to verify or solve the alleged crimes.

"They are not able to tell us what the taxi looked like or what color it is. They also gave us different information about how many people were there with guns," he continued.

but you'd still expect the local PD to follow up and talk to the people making claims on the Today show about being robbed by men with guns claiming to be cops. cuz if the real police do follow up and talk to the victims of these fake cops, maybe the real cops can find the fake cops and arrest them and keep it from happening to other people.

Yeah, sure. But I wouldn't make it into a big deal by pulling foreign athletes off planes. It seems like it could have been settled by getting hold of Feigen and saying, "Come on, you goofs weren't really robbed, right?"
