Ford is saying they'll be rolling out a fleet of self-driving cars in conjunction with the pink-moustache folks at Lyft "by" 2021:

re: scaring people thing. that's why I'd think you'd pilot in some place without many/any bridges and relatively flat etc.
early failures will be magnified x1000; build up a track record of success/safetly, and then have your driverless cars plunge families on the way to Pirates games into the Monongahela.

Traffic flow will be easy to deal with and get exponentially better when they can report to each other.

Inclement weather will be fixed in all but the most extreme conditions and those are rare.

exactly, which is a big benefit of introducing auto-pilot passenger vehicles via fleet-services like UBER and Lyft--they can easily network all the vehicles in their fleet.

good on UBER that they are taking the bridge by the girders and starting in Pittsburgh--which also has miserable winters. and you can't find better engineers and research computer science types than the guys at Carnegie Mellon.

What ultimately will sell people on driverless cars is what they can do with them in terms of safety in the event of a crash. Without a driver they can position the passengers and put much more protection in so even if your car does have a mishap it can adjust.

It seems like science fiction now but we may actually see cars eject themselves upward prior to a crash and then hover there like a drone when it discovers a potential accident situation. This would make fatalities in car crashes sink by such low levels that every person would easily want it.

Sounds great Rick. Will the government subsidize the purchase? I really don't feel like paying $250,000 for all of those features.

eh, read the article. private car ownership goes by the wayside, for MANY.

Quote:
In Pittsburgh, customers will request cars the normal way, via Uber’s app, and will be paired with a driverless car at random. Trips will be free for the time being, rather than the standard local rate of $1.30 per mile. In the long run, Kalanick says, prices will fall so low that the per-mile cost of travel, even for long trips in rural areas, will be cheaper in a driverless Uber than in a private car. “That could be seen as a threat,” says Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson. “We see it as an opportunity.”

You won't. Car technology gets cheaper and cheaper. At the start it would be on luxury brands only but it would quickly come down especially with such a high demand.

It should be perfected by the time I'm shitting my Depends so I won't have to rely on my kids to still love me enough to give me rides.

When it is perfected and popularized, hipsters will then wait in long lines to have a chance to drive a car

I imagine insurance companies won't be as excited either.

I think this is overblown. Technology has changed plenty of things and the governments just come up with different ways to get what they need to function.

Insurance companies don't go away with self driving cars. They just sell different kinds of insurance.

Local government finance will be fine--once all the current pensioners die off. a zika virus that mostly kills people over age 75 would be good right about now.

there's discussion that the autos themselves (Ford, GM, et al) will insure the self-driving cars--for losses related to the self-driving cars (whatever that means)

individuals might still carry some sort of basic liability insurance, cuz lawsuits.

but, yeah, given that 90% of auto accidents are directly attributable to driver error, claims and, you'd expect, premiums to drop precipitously under self-driving cars.

but if UBER is correct and people will find tying up money buying a car, and then insuring and maintaining it costs more than simply relying on an auto-pilot fleet vehicle. then the insurance companies will have to bargain with the fleet companies for rates and that's not as easy as imposing increases on drivers with little choice or bargaining power.

Swap the word monitor, which they can already do pretty easily using that phone you keep in your pocket 100% of the time, with the word control. And it wont really be used by the government nearly as much as it will be by the oligarchs who will program the cars to only take people to places within their circle. Think of it like an HMO, Uber will take you to McDonalds and Macys while Lyft will take you to Wendy's and Nordstroms. With the arrival of the self driving so ends the era of democratic transportation.

Just wait until these driverless Uber cars figure out how to rip you off out of $5.
