Probably. But when Heyward is up with 2 outs and a runner in scoring position (as with his last at bat) do you have any real hope he will get a hit, or do you head for the bathroom or refrigerator, knowing the end of the inning is coming?

Why would it be Jackson? Weren't they planning on sucking for most of his contract duration? I thought he was signed as one of those "innings eaters", but in this context it made sense.

If Heyward plays next year like he did this year, I think it has to be him hands down. What's the argument for Jackson?

Heyward has potential upside. Jackson does not.

I'd go with the guy they're paying to pitch against them.

IDK.

Steve, was there anyone you would have preferred to Heyward at the time?

Heyward will be a World Series hero for the Chicago Cubs.

Damnit leash.

Good point, except Jackson was signed with the intention of eating innings and giving them a credible starter, which made no sense since they were not trying to compete at that point. fortunately he lost approximately 70% of the games he had decisions for and they were able to cash in great draft picks for superior players. With Heyward signed to be one of the final pieces of the puzzle and in his athletic prime, he is expected to deliver. In my opinion both were big mistakes. Jackson, because it was money they should have saved, while pitching even lesser starters, rather than spending 14 million a year on a guy who was a .500 pitcher with a 4.40 ERA when he was signed. Heyward, because his baseball card tells you he will not hit enough to justify that kind of deal and with a guy like Almora in the system and enough corner outfielders already, Heyward was not needed.......nor wanted by smarter baseball fans.

I said before he was signed that I wanted Denard Span and Jordan Zimmermann and they signed for less money than what they gave Heyward alone.

I still don't see how it would be Jackson. If anything, wouldn't the Cubs be worse off now then if Edwin was actually good? If Theo is a third as smart as MANY of you think he is, he probably knew Edwin would be terrible and that's why he made sure to make it a longer contract. All part of The Plan.

Either way, it's Heyward unless we are ignoring how badly Lester is gonna regress after next season.

Carl Crawford

Heyward would be an mvp candidate with the Cardinals....somehow.
Jackson wasn't THAT expensive and he ate many innings for a shit team during the rebuild. He showed up every fifth day....except that one time in AZ.

OK, thanks. Just wasn't sure if you'd mentioned it.

If you have felt good about it in every situation as described this season, you have faced a LOT of disappointment in his at bats.

Sweet. I love to pay aging utility players $14M a season. Great trade and greater free agent signing.

It is working out well this season, but Zobrist is a guy I never would have signed either. I would have had Baez at 2B instead. Too many years at too much money for me. Plus, I don't like the idea of clogging up a position where young talented players are ready. that is why despite Fowlers stellar play this season, I would not bring him back, past the option for next year they have. Fowler has the option to opt out too and I expect he will opt out and then Almora takes over CF where he will win multiple gold gloves.

George Ofman's "Jason, you've been Edwin" line may have been prescient.
