Well if guaranteeing $2M is the worst signing Theo made.... no wonder they are renaming the Hall of Fame after him.

Right now it is Jackson. In the long run it will probably be Heyward.

No, I didn't.

Again, this thread is covering signings. Not trades. See my earlier response.

LeMahieu can easily be countered a thousand times over by Arrieta. So much of LeMahieu is aided by Coors. He is serviceable. He is not a star. Look at his Coors splits versus his career splits.

Why are you going on about trades in a signings thread?

It's easily Heyward. If the Cubs weren't so dominant it would be looked at potentially as one of the dumbest signings in baseball history. It would be too early to say it is but this will be an absolute disaster if this is how he is the length of the contract.

He was the biggest signing that Theo has done with the Cubs and he may not play in the playoffs.

Jackson.

Heyward showed last night that he's back. Was just slumping and needed some days off.

Jackson.

He literally provided nothing. The selling point was Jackson could eat innings. Yet his high pitch counts and ass whippings had him frequently pulled by the 5th.

Moneybags at least excels at something.

Clearly.

I mean ... three scheduled days off, conveniently in Colorado ... you do the math.

Jackson. Verdict is still out on Heyward.

It seems the bigger the signing, the harder it is for performance to follow expectations. Last year Lester was considered a horrible deal. Not so much this year. Hopefully Heyward can turn it around before year two. There have been few true signings that showed up as 'the big deal' and actually lived up to it. Smaller impact signings may be Maybe Moises Alou, Kevin Tapani, and Rod Beck. All really performed out of the gate. I consider these the Ying to the Mel Rojas and Jeff Blowser Yang.

I think the biggest WTF contract for the Cubs that actually worked out nicely was Ted Lilly. 4 years/$40M in 2007 dollars and he was SOLID for every year.

When they signed Lilly, I was like "who". Seemed like wasted money, and as you said, it worked out well.

My vote is Heyward because of the length and dollars involved. Also the Cubs had plenty of other talent to try in that spot. But Heyward could make good like the Lester comment above.

I thought I recalled reading somewhere that the thought behind signing Jackson is that Theo/Jed viewed him as affordable at the time that he signed especially in context to what they viewed the future market for pitchers would be. The signing I thought was in part a play on moving him in the future assuming that he was a serviceable or above serviceable starter. He obviously sucked dick though.

I could be remembering that wrong.

That was after the aborted Anibal Sanchez deal. He's pretty awful at this point also. Not Jackson awful, but awful.

He had just 1 hit last night and it just BARELY got over the wall, with the outfielder nearly catching it. It would be great if he could actually contribute with the bat regularly, but don't let one fly ball fool you into thinking Electra is out of his slump.

He reminds me of the Buick Electra 225 .......big and a poor mans Cadillac. Being that he is hitting right around .225 (he went into last night's game at .225) it fits that way too.

I can live with Thoyer's mistakes, for their positives far outweigh their negatives.

Count me among those who are ecstatic that Theo Epstein is running our favorite team. It's easy to forget because we're riding high now, but do you remember just how a big a mess and behind the times this organization was pre Theo? And to add to that, you have to give credit to Ricketts for being smart enough to not only the hire the best guy available, but also for staying the hell out of the way once he was in the fold.

Jackson was a head scratcher, it never made sense..I think Heyward rebounds next year and hits .270 ish the remainder of his deal..he could still come up huge in the post season in 6 weeks and all will be forgotten...

The problem with Heyward is that the Cubs paid him based on the hope that they could raise his ceiling. At least with Lester, they were just hoping for him to replicate past performance. Even that is difficult to obtain.

And Heyward has not only failed to raise his ceiling, he's fallen through the floor.
