The Del-Bar in Wisconsin Dells is a good one. They'll burn a nice steak for you.

We always hit that once when we are in town.

Upvote! I love that place.

They like that one too.

The clubs and omelette share the best at those Greek places and I always go on a Sunday so I can get the cream of chicken with rice soup. It's the best for hangovers and comfort.

That would be Market Square in Wheeling.

Being an in/out guy when it comes to dining even I think communal seating is too far in encouraging to GTFO .

Yeah, that's like calling IHOP a Greek place.

I believe we should honor the inalienable Greekness of the "family restaurant."

Oh God. My mother-in-law loves that place. All the fucking bustouts playing slot machines while I choke down some mediocre pancakes. At least they serve alcohol.

I was thinking, somewhat palindromically, of the Palatine Inn in Palatine.

Having a gyro platter on the menu doesn't make it a Greek diner.

That is a Greek diner though. My partner's Greek buddy from high school owns that place.

I wouldn't even say that a Greek diner has to be run by Greeks. It's just a style of restaurant. A coffee shop really. Menu has omelets and other egg dishes, open faced turkey, beef, and ham with gravy and mashed potatoes, and burger and other sandwiches that are offered "deluxe", i.e. with a cup of soup.

JORR gets it. Most diners are Greek, in my experience, and most are actually run by Greeks. I think I'm jumping ship to Gen X.

Also, there is usually a card clipped inside the menu with a list of daily specials that can be ordered "a la carte" (with soup or salad, choice of potato, vegetable, and bread basket) or as a "complete dinner" (with tomato juice or soup, salad or cottage cheese, choice of potato, vegetable, bread basket, and dessert).

^^ Knows his Greek fucking diners.

Also, the waitresses must be 50+, chain smoke, and call everyone "hun."

Yeah, I'd say being part of a national chain disqualifies the place from being called a "Greek coffee shop", even if it has the standard Greek coffee shop style menu. "Family restaurant" might be interchangeable with "Greek coffee shop" in many cases, but there are things I'd call "family restaurants" that are not open for breakfast, in which case they are definitely not Greek coffee shops.

AH!!! This was the little old lady who ran Peep's, my favorite hot dog stand (which wasn't even a *stand,* it was an actual building, what is wrong with you people, it was clearly a fast-casual dining opportunity) as a kid. A gravelly "what'll it be, honey" to every customer. It's called the "Prospect Heights Grill" now. Won't go.

No, I'm pretty sure we graduated high school the same year, which would make you about a year older than me. That must have been the critical year, though, because I don't think I myself ever went to a Wag's.

Hi-View in Villa Park and Big Apple on Schmale in Carol Stream. Like leash said earlier, Sunmist is really good too.

CLOSED. For a while. Too much competition with Nikko's and Tore & Luke's all within a 2 minute walk.

My favorite place JK Gyros across Wheeling High school closed two years ago. Place was great. RIP

Go to Dengeo's for gyro up by us. Gemato's if you're by the Nape.

Tore & Luke's is alright. I've started getting stuff from there sometimes.

JK's jam was their italian beef. I've been wandering aimlessly around the AH/BG/Wheeling corridor in search of a replacement when I need to get my fat fuck on.

Johnnie's Beef is fine. Though, I don't really *do* south of Northwest Highway Arlington Hts thing.

I love how you looked up stuff that happened that day. At least it wasn't some type of terrorist attack. It was a Saturday so at least no shitty Pat Benatar album came out on that day.
