I lived in The Sovereign for a year when I was in college. I was walking back from the Granville stop one time and a guy walked with me for a block or so and would not stop asking me for money. Usually I'd say "No" or "Sorry" and they'd move on to the next person but this guy wouldn't stop. I finally said "I'm a college student, I don't have any money. I had to sell a Dread Zeppelin CD just to afford condoms." and he gave up.

Awesome! We used to sneak into the Sovereign pool when we were kids. And I still like to throw a few back at Sovereign Liquors on occasion.

What's that pool like? I've always wondered.

If I remember correctly it was kind of dark and dingy back then. I'm sure it's been redone since the late 70s/early 80s. There may even be a health club in there now.

It think it was relatively nice when I was there in '89 to '90. IIRC the health club at that time was a couple of old exercise machines and a few stationary bikes. As a student I thought it was really a nice building to live in. We had a built-in oven, countertop stove, and a dishwasher. We lived there during the summer, too, and had a pretty powerful built-in AC unit in one of the windows which was great. We were on the fifth floor and could see a bit of the lake from the living room and bedroom windows. We were also directly across from the TKE house and saw some drunken ass-hattery on occasion there. The building was always clean and there was a doorman, so we thought it was kind of cool that our friends had to be "announced" by the doorman calling us to ask if it was OK to send them up when they came over.

I used to go to Soverign with my friend to pick up beer for his dad back when I was a freshman in high school. Edgewater was such an exotic place to me, even as much as my dad tried to take us to different parts of the city in my youth. The Granville El stop never really concerned me but I did run into my Latin teacher with another man at one of the places beneath the tracks. The gay thing didn't seem shocking or a big deal to me. The guy was a cool teacher who was understanding of my lack of academic ability so his secret was safe with me.

Swam there in the early 70's. Dark and dingy would be putting it nicely.

I worked one summer with a guy that would stop every Tuesday-Friday for a liquid lunch at Sovereign.

Before my wife settled for me, I think she dated a guy who was some type of regular at the Sovereign. I believe the poor guy died of a heart attack at like 35 or so, and I think it happened at the bar. JORR has to have known this guy.
