I was trained all of last week at Ball State on how to teach a basic Intro to Public Speaking course. I'm a graduate teaching assistant. All of the faculty is terrific. They're good people. The entire department is really positive. However, there were a few things during training that struck me a certain way.
1. Try not to address the class with "hey guys."
2. A student giving a speech on why millennials are stupid is not okay. That's called ageism.
3. On the first day of class, don't take attendance like you normally will be doing throughout the semester. Students are still trying to figure out their schedules and will be adding and dropping courses during the first week of school. You don't want to embarrass these students by calling out their names and them not being in class. On the first day, do icebreaker introductions with the students and write down everyone's name who are there.
It's all dependent on what school, and where it is, but in general, I get the feeling college culture is much more sensitive now. For good reasons and bad.
Fuck all that. I've already told two students to drop. What's the university gonna do, not pay me my five grand per semester?
