Sears gave me 27.00 in Shop Your Way rewards for getting a free refrigerator. This tells you all you need to know about their business model.

i only go to sears when they have something i ordered online for pickup.

that is one thing they do phenomenally well. their online-to-site ordering process is 1st class, it blows away any other store. if they go under that is one thing that i will miss.

and sometimes when im there i might browse around the tools section for discounts.. but really, you can get better tools off amazon under the name tekton, for a similar low price.. so i really dont care if craftsman dies.

the article was saying sears really started tanking after shop your way was implemented. its too convoluted and messy, which i completely agree. but at least i handle all of my points online- i never stand at the register asking about my points, because that is just a nightmare... but sadly, many people do this and it takes forever just to buy something in store.

That's why it shocked me. I'm rarely in there at all. Stopped in today because I lost the charger for my weed whacker battery and needed to replace it. The kid asked me if I wanted to check my rewards. I was polite and said sure but i doubt I have any. Voila. 26something. The only way I could have gotten them was from when we had a warranty replacement (and God help any of you that have do that through them) on our fridge back in June.

Sears has always had good infrastructure for taking orders (via catalog originally, now online) and having the customer pick-up at either a Sears store or---and these still exist in many smaller communities--a designated Sears order pick up location. Often a small-town independent pharmacy or a Sears retail location that specializes in large appliance or lawn tractors or some limited subset of the overall Sears inventory.

Amazon's been slowly rolling out a similar system (Amazon Locker?); using 7-11's and their own brick-and-mortar pick up spots.

Figure there's value in Sears--real estate for the stores is either leased very cheaply or owned by Sears, I think; and the history/existing infrastructure has whatever value. But I don't know if pumping $300 million a quarter or however often into the enterprise is a good idea at this point.

Data from end of 2015:

and there's a chart at the above link that shows "percentage of online sales" vs brick and mortar. Sears online business is such a miniscule part of their overall sales they don't even make the 2nd chart.

Plus, they created the Homart Development company for mall development later in the 1950s. The name Homart was derived from the location of the Sears headquarters at Homan Avenue and Arthington Street.

Funny you mention that store. Way back when me and my buddy went to tons of concerts. Almost always in first two rows. The secret was ticketmaster or ticketron at the Sears at Homan and Artington. Not too many people there for van halen or iron maiden. So we stay over from about 4am till open and run to the desk. Worked every time. I guess we seemed crazy enough no one fucked with us.

The problem with Sears is that they are a jack of all trades and master of none. There is a more specific place to buy everything they sell. I sold electronics there in college. Even though it was pretty good money around the holidays, people clearly didn't think of Sears when they needed a new TV... Or a new anything.

I bought a rack stereo system from Sears in 1983. They called it LXI. Used to take speakers back to get repaired weekly because the ones that came with the system could not handle the output of the system. Upgraded to Bose 901 and used the LXI until the late 90's.Really was a great rack stereo for the time.

I thought that was Wards. Maybe both did. I could ask the internet machine, but I'd rather keep typing this stupid reply.

I don't know about Ward's, but there are definitely Sears homes in Park Ridge and Morton Grove.

This lunatic I kind of know was a Navy frogman who was trained to rescue the capsule on the return of the Apollo missions. I don't think he actually ever did it though. This guy is fucking crazy. He has these semi-feral dogs that live on his property and they just keep procreating and making new dogs and it's like a pack of wolves out there. Last time I saw him he had a right-hand dog named Suzie who was the only one allowed in the house and she was the Alpha of all those wild dogs. But anyway, that isn't the point of the story. This goof loves to go to garage sales and second hand shops and buy broken Craftsman tools for a dollar or less. Then he has the balls to take them into Sears and demand replacements. At first they put up resistance, asking for receipts and shit, but this motherfucker is tenacious. He just wears them down. Standing his ground, he'll ask why the receipt matters if they have a lifetime guarantee. "OH, you no longer stand behind the Craftsman products??? I'll tell my tool-buying friends about that!" Eventually they give the guy the new tools just to get him the fuck out of the store.

If I spill what I know publicly, they will sue me.

I'm the only consultant that was ever paid a severance by Sears.

The $27 in a cash back account is the least of their worries.

Lampert is already being sued by shareholders for selling off the best real estate to fund the mismanagement, which is basically a looting of SHC.

Shareholders sue for everything. That's the coverage we write. Most shareholders want retailers to sell off their real estate. Macy's is going through that process right now. Getting rid of real estate is the least of Sears' problems.

The company lacks a winning strategy for getting people to come into their stores. They still have a dominant position in appliances, and they have brand recognition for Craftsman. Beyond that, there is no reason for anyone to go into a Sears store. Further mall based retailing is on a perpetual decline. It's probably too late to turn Sears around. They'll just shrink locations until there is nothing left Eventually another retailer will pick up the scraps.

On another note, I went into a Costco yesterday. Lines were ten deep, and the families in front of us had $500 and $400 bills.

I haven't bought anything in a Sears store since my mom last took me to one about 20 years ago. That is Sears' biggest challenge. Their customers are dying off, and there's nobody new out there to replace them.

Sears is horrible. The previous owners bought an expensive refrigerator from them and the ice machine is leaking. I called them up trying to see if they can help me troubleshoot it and it was basically "Is it less than a year old? If not, we can send out a technician for like $150." Most companies try and help you out over the phone.

They got outflanked in every business line. You have Best Buy with electronics and appliances. You have Home Depot which owns the outdoor and home improvement retail market. You have Kohl's which stole the show in cheap clothing. And then Wal-Mart and Target have owned mass market retailing. In every business line, there is a competitor that is either cheaper, more convenient, or has a better reputation.

Have you every received a Christmas gift in a Sears box? Ever given one in a Sears box? I bet you get/give those gifts from Target or Kohl's. Could you imagine the look on a kid's face if they opened a present, and the box was from Sears?

That doesn't even begin to talk about the challenges of mall based retailers and competition from online.

We bought a new Samsung refrigerator and the fucker was leaking almost immediately. I went on Youtube and found a bunch of complaints about the model and the fix for it. It turns out there was a little heating element, just a short wire really, designed to keep the ice from jamming up and causing the leak. But the element was about a quarter inch shorter than it should have been to work properly. The simple fix was just to attach a short piece of copper wire to the heating element. I haven't had a problem since. I probably wouldn't buy a Samsung refrigerator again though.

I probably mentioned this before but the geography nerd in me loves the Harlem/North intersection because depending on which side of the street you're on, you could be four different towns: Chicago, Oak Park, River Forest, or Elmwood Park.

My guess is they put a Target there. There were talks of one at Lake/Harlem where the Borders used to be, but I guess that never worked out.

They were doing work in about a month ago to open something, but it seems to have stopped.

3 years ago it was supposed to be an upscale grocery/restaurant.

2 years ago it was gonna be a UFC/MMA gym.

Who knows if anything will ever come of it.

Not sure they would put one that close to the ones at North / Cumberland and Brickyard, but I won't bitch if they do.

Speeps: I heard the same.

JORR: Yes, I drive by it every day. Across the street from it is a tent city full of protesters, that have been there for about 2 months I think. They call it "Freedom Square".
