Dan: "Do your own work and call into WYC. No one wants to hear me read."

Also Dan: "Wait until I read this worthless article to you and spend the next three segments defending it like I wrote it myself!"

Yeah this has been something. Don't tell me what you think. I will tell you what I think after looking at the data. I really want to go back to people just watching baseball and saying they suck or don't.

I just caught five minutes of this nitwit bernstein and I had to PTFB. I don't know about you, but I watch sports to see great athletes do great things. There's this modern fan, particularly in baseball, forged in a cauldron of statistics and fantasy games, who has this desire to diminish the player and elevate management. I have never turned on a game and said to myself, "I'm really excited to see Andrew Friedman's shift on Papi here!" But I think that's the way bernstein (and many others) view the game. They think you actually win games with computers. Because, while they could never turn around a 95 mph fastball, they certainly can look at a spreadsheet. And they can draw the wrong conclusions too. Brian Kenny spouts the same bullshit that bernstein does, only to be ridiculed by the actual big leaguers who work with him.

Anyone who calls to voice an opinion gets shot down before they can state what is on their mind.
The only things that count are arcane statistics.
This, to me, is extremely boring radio.
I thought the point of talk radio was for listeners to express opinions.
I guess I am wrong.

Yup.

It lets guys who never had the athletic ability to participate in sports at a high level, or maybe any level, to feel like they know more about the game than the players and coaches who had always dismissed their opinions because they never played.

This is their personal Revenge of the Nerds, so to speak.

Of course they think that. I've never called anyone an "egghead" in my life. In fact, I find it amusing that guys like you and bernstein believe you have staked out some intellectual high ground. The apex of this modern type of "thought" is encapsulated by the suggestion of a trade of Chris Sale for Theo Epstein with the modern fan believing the team that got Sale was on the short end.

No, they don't. Not a single person believes that the difference between 80 and 85 wins is a few extra processor cores or hyperthreading, nor anything of the sort.

Well, Bernstein feels that way, of course. But as for me I don't believe so, it just appears that way because of the ridiculous things your hatred of numbers and math cause you to say. To wit:

Someone somewhere makes some asinine trade proposition, and they become the bannerman for all of SABR-minded fans everywhere.

I'm not mounting an intellectual high ground, you're just digging a stupid ditch.

I don't hate numbers or math. I hate the wacky conclusions people draw by focusing on specific numbers, to wit: Javy Vazquez was a better pitcher than Mark Buehrle. Though a good argument could be made that Vazquez is the best pitcher ever with an ERA over 4.00.

That was a real conversation I heard on Kap's show with the panelists debating it as if it wasn't the silliest thing they ever heard. The greatest genius GM ever isn't worth an elite top of rotation starter. And in most cases their compensation reflects such, though with Sale's bad deal and Epstein ready to break the bank in the wake of back-to-back playoff appearances that may not long be the case for the two guys in question.

i remember a month or two ago (back when jake was going from 5IP pitcher to "kinda meh" ~3.50-4.50 ERA pitcher for another 2-3 weeks) b&b had some SABRgeek guest on (who namedropped Eno Sarris like it was a big deal) claim that arrieta is basically like carlos marmol 2: electric bugaloo.

i'm guessing since jake rebounded to find quasi-BPIB format b4 being "meh" again last night we're not back to marmol 2 status, riiiiiight?

(btw in terms of "BPIB" aka "best pitcher in baseball" remember that this season clayton kershaw had a ~4-5 game stretch with 10K+ dovetail into another ~5 start span (basically the month of may IIRC) where he had 3/5 starts be CG SHOs, and then the other ones were like 7IP <2ER and 8K+ (as his 10K+ streak ended when he started doing the 3/5 CG SHO streak) --- AND THEN he got hurt on june 26th and has been out since then, however he's STILL the #1 overall player in yahoo fantasy baseball despite being out for 2+ months =D

So what was the takeaway from the article? That the numbers show Jake is super great or that he's trending downward? I know what the eye test shows .

The sense I got was that hitters (particularly left-handed hitters) have been able to elevate the ball and hit it harder more often this year--or some period--versus other periods of sustained success. Looking at Pitch FX, they noticed that Jake's slider is losing some of its bite, as well as some other pitch-movement issues, and then looked to a frame-by-frame look at his mechanics from previous success and times that he's struggled, and noted that he's closing himself off more and dipping further down on his drive leg, which could explain the pitch movement issues.

I thought a more interesting way to go with the conversation was to discuss possible changes to the baseball, which seemed to me to be the one of the implications. After a couple seasons where the game was in a modern deadball era, suddenly scoring is on the rise, mainly, as bernstein pointed out, due to the ball just flying out of the park.

I just can't get over the Jewishness of this show w Bernsie and Rozner. Bridgewater's injury has turned into discussions about how prescription pain meds make Barry nauseated, and Bernstein's ice pack gave him freezer burn.

A couple days ago, they were whining about how messy PBJ sandwiches are. Now they are dissecting the Fifth amendment.
