Right, but he has more and better stuff than I do. I don't really have a ton of stuff. There are things that I'd like to have. The stuff I do have I appreciate the hell out of. Some of it facilitates the experiences that bring me joy. When you guys talk about taking my stuff, I get irritated because he's actually taking away experiences. I volunteer, we donate money, I try to leave the world better than I found it everyday. He makes it sound like I should be living in a worse neighborhood, sitting in a room with no furniture, eating spam out of a can while my kids can only play with stuff I picked out of a garbage.

I don't believe either of us is a criminal. But I do believe there is a way to have a better society that doesn't feature the accumulation of goods as its centerpiece.

Pronouncements such as 'there are no good cops' - which is to say ones that lack any semblance of nuance, are clearly hyperbolic, and rely on vague terminology (e.g., 'good') that can be defined in any number of ways - are not customarily the end result of long-form rational discussion.

I already explained what I meant by that. You may disagree with me, but it's not hyperbolic at all. There are professions out there that are immoral to be a part of. Surely you would agree with that. So, I just think police officers in the US are one of those. You and leash disagree. That's fine. You know what else doesn't lead to long form rational discussion? Dismissing opinions you don't agree with out of hand instead of taking the extra few seconds to actually articulate a rebuttal.

Blanket statements are bad. They tend to turn off even people who have a perspective that would agree on some levels. I am certainly one of those people who would tend to question some of the socialization that occurs in police forces and in prisons (among other things). However, when you say "all cops are bad cops", it's a non-starter for most of America... and that shouldn't at all be surprising.

It's not a personal thing. I know a lot of gangsters too. Most people might call them "bad". They do bad things. They do some good things too. They're part of a bad institution, but I like many of them on a personal level. I would say the same thing about cops.

BRick can't get my stuff, I keep all of my precious in the Cloud.

I think we're headed toward that egalitarian society; so far at a snail's pace, but leaps and bounds are a-comin':

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/minimum ... -1.3740373

e.g, driver-less/drone/auto-pilot cars could eliminate, or at least greatly reduce, private car ownership.

and 3-D printing and the accompanying savings in distribution costs etc should reduce the cost of basic and even non-basic goods to the point that a basic income = a decent quality of life. heck, even today, you can walk into a store and walk out with a 4K flat screen for a few hundo. Cheap, but how much of that was moving the inputs and then the finished good around the planet?

drug prohibition and the resulting criminal activities to circumvent that prohibition are probably the biggest LE expenditure; and we're slowly moving on from blanket prohibition.

of the triad underlying the French Revolution--Liberté, égalité, fraternité--equality is the most prominent strain throughout American history. An egalitarian society is the direction we've been moving since 1776 and continue to stumble toward.

If I were innerested in unpacking your point, beyond my wanting to hold you to better-defined terminology, I might start with your contention that since 'x' number of laws are "immoral" (another completely vague term), there are no "good" cops ... but that implies a very simplistic with no apparent need to mention that some of the police force are individually "immoral", I don't even know who or what you are trying to find fault with.

Is it the police as a collective? What if they collectively decided to not enforce these "immoral" laws? One might suggest that they're 'not allowed' to do that (which, of course, they are) but if that's the case, why isn't the onus at least equally, if not more so, on the people who made those laws in the first place? What about the citizenry that put those lawmakers in a position to do so ... and then didn't remove them from that position afterwards?

Regardless, by your rationale you have to then say that there no "good" soldiers.

Why stop there ... why not just say there are no "good" people? Outside of a theological debate, which I will presume you're not trying to have on any level, if that's the case then there's no point in trying to make anything better b/c nobody is "good" enough to do so ... which is one of the reasons why there needs to be at least some effort made to 'fence in' certain words and ideas being used to have an alleged rational discussion about topic like this. That's all my initial contention is about.

Right now I'd be happy with an app based gaming system that doesn't feature the accumulation of Pokemon as its centerpiece.

Yes, but that's different than saying "all cops are bad." It's a statement that, even if you knew nothing of the profession, is so statistically improbable (in addition to the fact that - as Don Tiny points out - "bad" is a vague term) that it's a meaningless statement that no one could possibly know. It's also nearly impossible that it's true. A better statement is "the American institution of law enforcement promotes 'bad' things and is a bad institution, even though it has good people." That's a much better argument.

Stop being hyperbolic. You sound ridiculous.

Tell that to the guy who started the thread. I'm just agreeing.

There's a difference between saying "no such thing as a good cop" and saying "the institution of police is a net negative" or "the environment of police departments promotes bad cops." There are undoubtedly thousands of good cops in this country.

JORR has also started a thread previously saying there's no good cops, and he is friends with some cops. Cops volunteer to enforce immoral laws using the threat of violence and imprisonment, so no, there are not thousands of good cops out there. There's not even one.

Are there good McDonald's workers?

Probably. I've never had a McDonald's worker draw a gun on me and search me even though I had done nothing wrong.

Well, both would be nice. If I'm ever robbed at gunpoint and my neighbors want to ask the robbers politely to give my stuff back and they do then I would be pretty happy. I'll still be happy that I can call the police though.

And how will calling the police help you in that situation? I think your better argument would be to say that the existence of the police prevents such things from occurring, although such a statement, particularly with regard to certain areas, is clearly untrue.
Did you just ask how calling the police when you are being robbed at gunpoint would help?

You can't which is the why the question is idiotic.

No matter what happens you need some kind of police force. If not you get a situation like the Walking Dead where you just devolve into tiny islands of despots who enforce their own code of laws.
