We went through this back in the score670.com days. I was looking at leaving State Farm and A-Rodgers for either the Gecko or Flo and BigFan warned me not to, I'd regret it. So I've stuck with State Farm.

And car at the same time. About $2500 actually.

But we have 4 cars and so now he's a driver on all 4 cars because it's by household, not car.

I knew that was coming.

I was hoping I wasn't the first person on the board to add a car and driver to insurance.

State Farm kicked me off for abusing roadside assistance (that old Miata of mine had some problems) and switched to Progressive. Nothing has changed at all.

State Farm's roadside assistance is for shite. I still carry the RV version of AAA roadside. Much less hassle, if'n I need it.

I post threads about Calvin Johnson being on Dancing with the Stars with Vanilla Ice, Ryan Lotche and midgets, or Blake Griffin doing stand up and lucky if I get 2 replies.

I would suggest that being 'happy' that your current insurance company offered you a lower rate only b/c you're shopping around probably is something to be pissed off about as they clearly could've charged you less before, so why the hell didn't they?

Rule of thumb is check with broker's if you have a problem or two (e.g., bad credit, bad driving, bad medicine). Otherwise look for the name companies if you think you're a good risk.

A note on 'accident forgiveness', the short version is you're already paying for that next accident that you might not even ever have ... that's how they don't lose their ass. I forget whoever it was that started this racket, but I do recall that their pricing scheme for the best risks that wanted to add that 'coverage' was to charge them something like 127% of the normal premium.

Eh, I don't feel like doing this at this time of night.

Ken, pm me with your questions or concerns.

Hell, anyone else can do so too.

A final note that I'm not a salesman ... I stink at that ... evidenced by, for example, not mentioning 'my' company. I'm just offering a quasi-learned opinion.

Take the savings as long as there are no major changes in your policy.

I get quotes all the time that are more than I pay now. In mail almost daily. I have a clean MVR no DUI or any blemishes for 30 years. Hard to believe as I am a total drunk in the eyes of some of the board.

You pretty much have to hit someone to get a DUI in Chicago

I don't personally know anyone who got a DRINK in Chicago. I'm sure parts of the Northside are like MANY suburbs.

Yep. Just added Dr. Ken Jr. I and his car and State Farm jacked me up $2k/year.
State Farm did this to me after the East Coast got a few hurricanes even though I had no damage claims. I believe my rates had tripled in about a year. I should have been concerned when I moved out there and they had to get ok from corporate to give me a condo policy while I was switching over my insurance.

I called up All State and they asked what I was paying now and he started laughing on the phone and said "Yeah, they do that to drop customers". He put me back down to a low rate with the exact same coverage.

Combined with my parents we had State Farm for about 40 years and now I'm done with them forever.

Can't wait for Darkside and Scooter to show up and tell me I'm stupid for this one too.

Scooter - those quotes you are receiving are almost certainly based on the absolute best-case scenario and, unless you have specifically asked for that quote and given them your bio info (bdate, ssn, d/l#, etc), probably aren't personalized to much, if any, degree. Life insurance is broadly marketed this way too.

To the rest of the class ... when considering which insurance to carry, while price of course plays a part in it (like most everything else), you would do yourself a favor by investigating how a company does when it comes time to deal with a claim, b/c if the company sucks at that, I don't care how much money you saved on your insurance, you'll be madder than a raped ape if their claims service sucks.

Aside from (God forbid) being "outgoing" and asking your neighbors and/or friends if they have any usable information to share, there's also something the state keeps track of called a 'complaints ratio'.

What that is, in a nutshell, is a metric that weighs how much premium a given company takes in and weighs it against claims reported and then also how many of those claims experiences people said sucked out loud. There's more to it than that, but the idea is not only does it offer a medicinal look as to who may take care of their customers better or worse than others, but it gives equal footing to insurance companies regardless of size ... theoretically, "Bob's Insurance" has the ability to be equitably compared to State Farm for example.

The most recent compiled numbers I could find right quick was from 2014 (http://insurance.illinois.gov/complaints/complaintRatioLinks14.asp) ... if you want to see the top companies, select the 'Consumer Complaint by Complaint Ratio' option ... for some reason they list the worst first, so you'll find the best-rated companies at the end of each section.

As we're discussing auto, go to page five and read from the bottom-up ... the top three companies are (1) 'State Farm Fire & Casualty', (2) 'Country Preferred Insurance Company', and (3) 'Country Mutual Insurance Company'. That doesn't make them perfect, that just means that dollar for dollar, (considerably) fewer people on average are unhappy with their claims experience.

We have All State. We pay about $1100 per year, for two drivers, and three old cars.

What amount of $ constitutes 'way more'?

A clean-record male 16-19 typically costs less than 10% more than an similarly aged and rated female driver. That's unlikely to be more than $200 a year difference. More? Yes. Way more? Subjective interpretation.

Also, unless there has been some unfortunate driving incidents, there's almost no reason that your insurance agent/company should choose to rate a youthful driver on anything but the most inexpensive vehicle.
