You're describing any community though. There are people you want to be friends with and those you simply tolerate. This message board is a good example. And seriously, it's kind of amusing to hear IMU, one of the biggest extroverts I've ever met, piss on community.

Really?

I went to a block party this weekend and it was nothing but shiny, happy people. It seemed like such an idyllic place and I kind of felt bad that mine was nothing like this. I went to the Cubs game with the guy who invited me to the block party and the shit talking about the people on his block started before we even got into our seats.

I always tell my kids the only people you are really going to be able to rely on in the world are the people in this room. I'd add family because we are pretty close on both sides. Maybe a couple of friends, if you get really lucky in life.

You don't think so? In the message board world of introverts he and Seacrest definitely stand out. They're the only guys I've met from the board I would call extroverts.

I agree with you when it comes to Seacrest but I don't think IMU is much different than someone like you. He's a big extrovert if you are comparing him to SPmack.

Not true. I don't think I've been to one where I haven't met every board member present. I've never cut out early. I held a conversation with jalapeno's and more.

Or at least he thinks it's fine. There are a lot of people who aren't doing as well as we are though. Some of them would love to have a ten year old car, if only to sleep in.

You mentioned in another post that your family prefers to "do things" rather than buy stuff. I definitely think experiences are more valuable than possessions. Experiences are about community. Gathering possessions in a suburban home is the opposite of that.

I do. I feel like you make it sound like we should all be sleeping in 10 year old cars. Most people don't have the wealth you are talking about and have normal lives. I have more than some and less than others. It is what it is. It doesn't make me good or bad, it just is.

They are still good to each other though. Do you only value relationships that are life and death deep? There is value in superficial but nice enough ones.

Yeah, I didn't say you were shy. I'm not shy either. But we are introverts. I can tell you don't get your energy from being with others.

I do value those relationships. I even value the one's that are based on a single point of commonality.

I do think there are levels of relationships. I'm not quick to call people "the greatest" like I hear thrown around so much by neighborhood besties.

No but Julie Dicaro has never said Patrick Kane is guilty either. Some people are caught up in stuff, they buy what they can't afford or spend friviously. I think lots of people just exist. They want the nicest things they can afford or buy things they enjoy. I don't spend for the sake of spending or buy for the sake of buying.

I'm being serious. You talk a lot, really fast, and with a lot of emphasis. Those are all extrovert characteristics.

I'm not sure that is true at least here. This message board gets buddy-buddy real quick. I don't even like you and I consider you a friend. Outside of guys like beerfan and leashyourkids everyone here seems like they make some friends here even if they've never met.

I think once you get past the age of 25 you realize that getting more friends is pretty overrated especially in the age of instant communication with anyone no matter where you move. When I moved to New York some of my family members encouraged me to join a league or something to make friends. I said "Why? I can play xbox with my friends I've had for 20 years or we can just message back and forth".

I only really care now because I want my kid when he is older to have kids his age he can hang out with. That's why I've made an effort to get to know some of the other families in the neighborhood. If it wasn't for that I'd be good with how things are now.

I'd rather meet MANY from this board rather than the people in my neighborhood otherwise.

I agree with most of what you wrote, except I do believe that the vast majority here are introverts or at least very weak extroverts. Think about how many people here play video games, watch sports alone at home, or communicate constantly with written communication as opposed to verbal communication. Extroverts would have a hard time doing well on a message board like this, IMO. They would be squashed in the world of the written word where they can't verbalize their thoughts.

A guy who used to teach some Myers-Briggs classes I knew always used to say that you also can't use your work or other hobbies to characterize what you are (I v E). He would use the phrase "What are you doing at 2:00 on a Saturday?" If it is typically an alone activity or one with a few very close friends, you're probably more introverted. If it is being around larger groups or acquaintances, you're probably an E.

I completely agree with what you're saying about relationships as you age. I'd prefer to have people I'm not obligated to see in person if I don't want. That's why I'm an introvert. :)

You should be happy then. Introverts are much better people than extroverts.
