The Cloverfield monster looks like Linda S. without makeup during her period.

I thought they were not going to show the monster in the movie?

This is pretty much what the monster looks like. The movie itself wasn't bad. The initial strike freaked me out. I think the movie gets weaker over time, but the good thing is this film is relatively short, and it pretty much has you on the edge of your seat the entire time. I gave it a B-, because while it was entertaining, I wanted to see more of the monster, and I expected it to be a little bit cooler looking than this weird thing.

The wife and the daughter went to see it tonight.

They said it sucked.

Silence at the conclusion of the movie followed by people saying:

I want my money back.

I want my time back.

That sucked.

I'll save my couch coins for Rambo.

So let me rant a little bit here...

For a movie that was supposed to feel "real", it was an absolute failure. First thing I noticed was that I recognized one of the actors immediately. The girl who played Marlena, Lizzy Caplan, who plays Kat in the sitcom "The Class" (debuted last year). Note to filmmakers: When you're making a film in which you want to display nobody's, might not want to cast anyone who has been in a major network show in the last...uh, year. Yeah. Casting director: bad. She was also in "Freaks & Geeks" but I know a lot of people didn't see that and that was at least almost 10 years ago.

The first ten minutes of the movie seemed promising. I really liked the set up, that's why I was stoked to see it. I recently had been to a good-bye bash to my closest friend who now lives in Oregon and that was what I thought of when I saw the trailer to this. Wow, what if we were caught in that? I don't know, it just ran through my head. Well, ten minutes into the film you start noticing a trend in the cast: they all look like actors.

The party itself looked like an Oscar after party, although I think that would be as close as any of the people involved with this film would get to one...everyone was too good-looking. Nobody looked like someone you would see just walking down the street. The strangest thing was, the one actress I did recognize looked the MOST normal. The other thing: nobody sounded like they were from New York. I mean, no one. Not even the random people. I realize that NYC is loaded with people from all over the country. But everyone in this film sounded like they were from California.

The only thing that felt "real" about it was the jiggling hand-held camera effect which...felt exactly like that...just an effect. Everything else about the film is as unbelievable, staged, and contrived as you would see in any "movie".

Okay, fine. So it was a movie. Yeah, we all know that. We know it's a movie. Then why did they try to sell it as something that "could have happened"?

Periods of the "tape" are interrupted (conveniently) by old footage of the main character, Rob, and his devastatingly beautiful (whodathunk!) girlfrend...and the most annoying comes at the very end. How did that happen...? In the beginning, it's lamented that the tape they're using to film this good-bye party is the same tape that was used by Rob to film his exploits with his girlfriend. But yeah...bits and pieces pop up here and there in the film. Even if that does happen in actual digital cameras--the very beginning of the film makes it seem like you're watching footage that has been captured by the government. So why would THEY have kept it? Especially the last bit?

I hated this movie for everything that I've just went on about. It was an absolute joke. There are so many "movie moments" that it completely took me out of it emotionally, and what it wound up being was an hour and a half of dizzying camerawork...

When they're attacked by the weird "little" creatures--first of all, they should have all been killed immediately. There is no way they would have survived that...second, it really looked just like...OH MY GOD WE'RE BEING ATTACKED BY CGI MONSTERS! AAHHH!!

Every cliche you could think of is in this movie. The girl in distress, the hero who by impossible odds finds her (not without the loss of someone important to him though of course!!!). So, okay if the argument is that it was meant to be like that...then why was it advertised as something "we've never seen before in a monster movie"?

It felt like this movie was pitched around a network executive conference room where it went like this: "GUYS! Let's take the RAWNESS of 'The Blair Witch Project' and the AWESOMENESS of 'Independence Day' and SYNERGIZE THE TWO TOGETHER!!!"

At least in "The Blair Witch Project", the sell out came AFTER being made. Whatever intentions this film had...went as about awry as the good-bye party that was the only promising part of the whole film.

Shame on you, JJ Abrams. You're really disappointing me lately...

no :D 's to give here. Just :x :x :x :x

When you go the action/thriller route, you really have two choices. The first is to go balls-to-the-wall, over the top, play up every cliche for all its worth and outdo the competition. You won't earn the plaudits of the snobs, but it'll be fun and entertaining, and at the end of the day, that's better than a whole lot of movies.

The other option is to break all those little rules and cliches, and try to make an important point or whatever. I thought that No Country for Old Men did that wonderfully. Everything felt like it was off a beat or two. Nothing happens the way you'd expect.

Anything in between is bound for disappointment: not high adrenaline enough to be exhilirating, but played up like an Important, Groundbreaking Film that fails to live up to expectations.

piling on a little more...

it was amazing how with all the destruction and pandemonium...NO ONE felt the need to use the F bomb.

So I guess New Yorkers have really cleaned up their act.

This franchise won't get good until the fourth or fifth movie.

Saw the movie today, thumbs up.

I know I'm old and I'm OK with that.

People NOT from NYC living in NYC. That's a shlocking development. I think the working title was FRIENDS v. The Monster To Find The Hottest Friend: Fellowship Of The Sexy.

I've never watched Alias or Lost so the transition from action scene to flashback was fresh to me :P .

For all the reviewers and blogger types on the internets comparing scenes to 9/11 in this movie, get over yourself, you have not cornered the market on tragedy.

I'll now go have a slusho and a smile and shut the fuck up.

Saw it today.

Basically is was Blair Witch meets Godzilla. It thought it was worth 4 bucks of the 7 I paid. It was good not great. The camera work was annoying at times. The funny thing about this movie is the sound and the base rockin' the theater really helped make the movie. If you wait to see it as a rental you'll be missing that.
