Yes, I'm serious. Firing people from their jobs because of their personal beliefs and/or political affiliations is a step down a bad, bad road. We shouldn't trek down it with glee like MANY seem to want to.

There was a food critic who was recently in the news because someone had outed him for being a skinhead punk in college, with the tattoos to boot. He had to beg and plead to keep his job and had Gawker, of all places, calling for his reinstatement.

You want this cop to lose his job because of some bad ink and...what, exactly? Is there any evidence of misconduct?

So, without any evidence of misconduct, you want someone to lose their job and income stream for ascribing to a certain ideology. Maybe, I dunno, assign him to the evidence room or desk duty instead of cutting off his livelihood because you don't like the thoughts you think he has in his head?

Do we do this with any other political/ideological combination? Do we flush out and fire that guy who preaches Wahhabiism in his spare moments, or the guy who distributes communist pamphlets in his free time, simply because of their sociopolitical beliefs?
