I agree. And I think we both obviously realize there are probably MANY officers who have beliefs that are incompatible with being able to be a good public servant in the US, but if you are openly advertising those beliefs in uniform it seems like an easy call.

While I also don't want Nazi police officers, what would that law/regulation sound like? How would we define what is off-limits?

It would obviously be a lot more complicated than anything I'm going to bother typing. I think the tattoo policy in AR 670-1 or whatever manual it is in is several pages long. The point is simply that there is a standard that everyone should have to uphold. I'm of the belief that not having Nazi tattoos should be part of that standard.

I think you'd actually have to specify what words and symbols are off-limit. Otherwise, there'd be too much stuff that could fall into the description. You couldn't use words like "hateful," "racist", etc because they could be interpreted too broadly.

makes sense that a self-identified group of people who base their group identity on negating other people's imaginary best friends might not be the most warmly rec'd/highly regarded group.

if they simply asked "People who don't give god/religion a second thought" that group prolly wouldn't be neck and neck with "potential suicide bombers" as the most hated group on that poll.

Don't be dumb.

:D sorry, forgot i was on cfmb.com and not trolling /r/atheist. they just love the "other people's imaginary best friend" line. gets em worked up every time. a spinner lure they can't resist.

I think you're viewing this too much through the prism of your current job. There's no interpretation that matters except for the officers in your chain of command or at your recruitment office. I mean, I'm sure you can try to appeal it if they don't let you in, but considering they can't even get dying veterans the benefits they need, I don't see that appeal as being a very high priority case, so you may as well just move on and hope Papa John's isn't as judgmental about the swastika on your neck.

Come on. You're not that naïve. Any regulation written poorly and then enforced would be challenged quickly, and there would have to be good ground to stand on to uphold it. This is America. People sue because the warning on coffee doesn't adequately convey how hot it is. It's not as simple as saying that people with offensive tattoos can't be cops.

And my intent isn't to get into the legal interpretation of the wording - it is simply that there would be many unintended consequences from such a standard if it wasn't a very specifically written standard.

This is a misunderstood case. Read about what really happened with that lady and McDonalds. The coffee was much hotter than what is generally accepted in the food industry and the woman didn't just have some redness on her legs, she had second degree burns all over the backs of her legs.

Has this guy said anything at all yet? I am interested to know how deep in the neo nazi / aryan brotherhood he is. Or if he is really a big dumb fan of this sort of ink because he is German.

Outside of the organized groups you see from time to time and some bikers I don't really ever recall hearing about nazi symbols much anymore. When young it was a big deal in Chicago but that's the extent that I know. When I looked earlier today the groups above seemed to have modified and changed a lot of nazi/German stuff around to make it their own. Even this guy has the eagle but no swastika.

Anyway I just wondered. He is pretty dmv for having it and will have caused himself a ton of trouble if he is just like some boob in Joliet that worships all things confederate because of lynyrd skynrd and Molly hatchet.

I should have consulted with someone of your expertise before commenting. I'm sure you are well-versed on how to prepare the coffee at McDonald's.

Was wondering this as well. Makes me think of the band Slayer who loved using Nazi imagery (like the eagle) and even wrote a song about the Nazis performing experiments on Jews in the Holocaust. They just thought Nazi stuff was cool.

I'm the same way when it comes to Nazi shit. However, I'm not a public servant with Nazi ink.

Is there really a grey area for Nazis? Do we have to be questioning just how Nazi he actually is?

Whether a tattoo is of a swastika (a religious symbol in Hindu and Buddhist religions that dates back to before the 2nd century BC, obviously way before the Nazi party existed) or BLM or another hate group of that kind, unless the officer wearing the ink has done something wrong to show he/ she is unfit to serve in that capacity, nothing should be done.

Fuck that dude. He's not a Buddhist. He's a Nazi fucking shit head. Being someone who is by nature a Nazi make him unfit to serve his community without prejudice. Don't be an obtuse dick wad.

Agreed, but you're telling an openly racist former cop not to defend an openly racist cop. That's a tough sell.

I keep wanting to sing "Nazi Cop" to the tune of "Start Me Up." It's not making the song any less abhorrent.
