That certainly seems excessive. I would have to assume that the the vast majority of their time is spent writing tickets. It's like paying tribute to a gang. How many violent crimes are occurring everyday in Elk Grove?

Maybe they aren't occurring BECAUSE so many police....

What the fuck are you talking about? If police were the answer D.C. would have less crime than Irvine. Is that hard to figure out?

You gonna post stupid GIFs or give an intelligent explanation? It's been suggested here that a lack of police means "anarchy". The above stat is real, so how could that be true?

Answer: Class/race/opportunity/segregation/generational malaise/(mental) health

So if we address those issues, we don't need police?

Nope. I ain't that stupid. There's no all-encompassing solution, as you well know. That's why we need the cops. Even the most stable neighborhoods need them. As I said earlier (or meant to say), cops do a lot more than policing. They resolve disputes and document them. Every neighborhood (dysfunctional, stable, somewhere in between) needs that.

There are those that look at things the way they are and say they have to be that way. I dream of things that could be, and ask why not?

Agreed! Why not ask why not?

Less malaise = less need for cops. But we'll always need 'em because we'll never get to the utopia and because cops do other stuff.

We had a high school social studies teacher that liked to challenge the status quo in really what amounts to an exercise where the prevailing dogma cannot be proved by the people in the class. His little exercise was famous at Conant. He would challenge the students in the class room to prove that the moon was a sphere instead of flat. No matter what argument you would make, he would have the handy counterpoint. "The space program was staged, etc , etc."

And that's what this thread is all about. Common sense tells us that the United States would be a lawless place without the police. But since we can't run the actual experiment, there is no way to prove that to be the case.

I just gave you the real life example of Irvine, California that has a very minimal police presence. Why isn't Irvine a lawless place?

You have the logic backwards, and you know it. They add cops due to increased crime. If Irvine heats up, they'll need to add more police. I also think the Capitol is a really bad example because you're going to always have a heightened security presence with so many important leaders situated in one place.

Go ahead and keep arguing something that is so ridiculous that you should be commended just for trying. I guess you got tired of the wins stuff and needed a new red herring to rile up the masses.

What? You're suggesting that without cops there is anarchy. By your logic the place with less cops should be closer to anarchy. Is Irvine some utopia? How is it that they don't require much policing?

My wife is from Irvine. Everyone there is college educated and solid middle class. University town with virtually no poor people. The place was invented as a safe place for Whitey back in the 1970s but Asians have infiltrated today. Everyone there has too much to lose by committing crime.

It's simple JORR to just about any person but the firmest of devil's advocates. DC has more crime than 97% of other cities. Irvine is safer than 56%.

https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/dc/washington/crime/

You're trying to compare a very high crime area with a mid tier crime city. But have at it. I am sure DC is violent because of the police presence. You're almost there to creating your utopian society where you sit at 81 Cub home games a year while saying it is a shitty franchise with a terrible ballpark, while the rest of us 3%-ers do not deserve our paychecks.

So, it's not police that stop crime. It's people having a good standard of living.

Speaking of Irvine, did you follow the Kelli Peters v. Kent & Jill Easter story? Fascinating.

I'm comparing police officers per capita. D.C. has more cops and more crime. Maybe cops create crime.

There isn't much crime in well off areas. Give a man a decent wage and he becomes a model citizen.

I'm not in favor of abolishing the police, but it's not the radical, ridiculous idea that it's being made to be. MANY have proposed similar things before.

Cops certainly create crime. Putting people in prison and fining them is good for business.

What's the difference between Lincoln Park and Englewood? Why do you think there is more crime in one in comparison to the other? How do the police interact with the residents of both communities? What's the police presence like in both? Which community do you feel safer in?

Most board members couldn't find Englewood with a GPS.
