I think there are a lot of people who like the idea of being thought of as left who are far less left in practice.

Though I hesitate to group myself with you, I must say that I'm probably in that group. First, I am far less "Left" ,even philosophically, than I used to be. Sometimes my hatred for the ignorance of the Republican party makes me seem more liberal than I actually am. Second, I'm absolutely not liberal in practice. I consume, work far more than I should, make a good living, and in practice, give very little of it back. I do go to Coinstar once every couple months and donate all my change to charity, however. I also work in a very conservative industry and drive a gas-guzzling truck. I almost think that my unwillingness to adhere to what I preach is the reason - especially when I was younger - that I wanted government to regulate it. I didn't believe that anyone would truly try to consumer less fossil fuel, etc. on their own.

Oh, yeah, I also attend klan meetings.

Yes, though I would substitute the words "idealist" and "realist." I think that, as we age, we realize life is imperfect and people are selfish (including ourselves). If nothing else, we become more self-aware and realize our own hypocrisy.

Additionally, the older I get, the more I realize that most "bleeding hearts" are miserable people (not all). It takes a truly special and compassionate person to go through life caring about and giving to others while also not being a complete downer to everyone around you at all times. At some point, there is the realization that you have to look out for yourself and your family first. However, I don't condone becoming so jaded that we literally stop caring about our fellow man at all. There are those who go too far the other way (Ayn Rand worshippers, for example).

True. Idealists can be pretty rough around the edges, too, though. Many of them aren't actually idealists. They are just miserable people who find that acting like an idealist gives them a convenient excuse to hate everything and never try in life.
