They've missed on most draft picks and FA signings repeatedly.

Like someone else said, their talent evaluation is for shit.

Operation Dumpster Fire.

And through it all, you could argue that they've overachieved. Even the 5-11 season that purged Trestman and Emery was still five wins. My god, it could have been much, much, much, much worse. They were .500 into mid-to-late October, just deep enough for meatballs to stay interested, and crawled back up to 5-6 after the Patriots/Packers blowouts. I want to see all the bad decisions come home to roost once and for all, where these guys get their clocks cleaned like six weeks in a row to start the year.

I think that is more telling of how truly awful some teams are in the NFL, and the watering down of talent throughout the league. They had some real offensive playmakers under Trestman, so in one sense you could say 5 or 6 wins was really underachieving under Tresty.

I heard this morning that Cody Whitehair is going to start at Center. Is that for real? If so, RIP Cutler. I have a feeling this season is going to end up being just woeful. With the Eagles being awful and Romo out, they could start out with 3 early wins. After that I see a long losing streak with the Bears ending up around 12 losses.

This essentially has been my argument. Going back to 2000, except for Urlacher and maybe Harris, which two Bears #1's wouldn't you have packaged in a trade for Jay Cutler? I realize we gave up Orkman too but other than some success with Brandon Marshall I don't recall him doing a whole lot after he left.

That's a bad argument though. You might as well just fold the franchise if you can't hope that they can make a good first round pick.

I get what you are saying. However they needed a real quarterback and unlike draft picks which only arrive with their hype and possibilities, cutler had shown something in the nfl. Their inability to draft is a separate issue which, 2 GMs later, still may be unresolved.

They traded him for him when he was 25 years old. He's 33 now. Your last two sentences directly contradict eachother. Objectively looking at it, it's clear the Cutler trade set them back a decade, literally. It's one of the worst trades in modern football history when viewed through that lens. Cutler underachieving is as much to blame as Emery for that.

How much did the years and years of terrible drafts set them back? I mean, wasn't 2007 an all-timer for not amounting to shit? There were other years like that. Cutler may not have been everything he was advertised to be, but the team really couldn't develop talent around him, or on defense, or anywhere.

I suppose the argument could be that trading for Cutler was like buying a temperamental sports car when you struggle to pay your water bill, but the trade in and of itself wasn't that harmful, I don't think.

Is part of their plan never starting drives at or ahead of what a touchback would be? Because since Toub took off after Lovie getting fired this team has never seemed to be able to do even the bare minimum on ST.

This Bears team looks as mediocre or bad as the last few years. It looks like the talk on the board is more about other things. I'm getting a sense of been there, done that with the Bears. It does seem like one big rerun.

The trade was the trade... it was the contract extension that Emery gave him that was the problem. Emery has set this team back much worse than Cutler ever has.

Our only hope is that Peyton Manning buys the Bears.
