I think Apple is expecting weak sales of the 7. They've already announced the 7 plus is "sold out" (a frequent ploy by Apple -- making small initial supplies to create a heightened perception of demand), but have also announced that for the first time, they will not be releasing opening weekend sales numbers.

They have fallen behind Samsung in several areas (most notably, screen quality) and need to figure out how to make sure the product that accounts for 2/3 of their sales can get back to being state of the art. (Though it looks like they have caught a break with Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 being recalled due to exploding batteries...)
