And the ones in uniform see that, and see their dwindling numbers on the field, and they talk about it among themselves, just how few faces look like theirs, how sometimes there isn’t a single person in whom they can confide the experience of being a black man in America, which, like it or not, is different and is tangible. Inside the Arizona Diamondbacks clubhouse La Russa put together, Rickie Weeks is the lone African-American, one of 25. And this is not rare.

So black ballplayers do talk with each other and they do wonder: Why is this the case? They don’t want to believe the sport they love is fundamentally racist, that there is some conspiracy against black ballplayers, but they know the number: 8 percent. Less than one of every dozen major league players is black. That’s more than half the number of a quarter-century ago, about a third of baseball at its peak. Even if baseball hasn’t actively sought to keep blacks out of the game, it sat around while the demographics changed and did nothing to plug the leak.

And now it’s left with a truth that African-American ballplayers for years have said among themselves and Jones elucidated publicly: Baseball, in America, is a white, elitist sport. Look at the crowds in stadiums. Look at the demographics of TV viewers. Look at youth tournaments. Whites overwhelmingly populate every corner of American baseball. And when Jones says he feels like there are two strikes against him, well, he understands men like Tony La Russa are waiting to turn a protest into a referendum.

This is utter nonsense.

How many teams have youth outreach or fund inner city baseball?

How is baseball supposed to "plug the leak"? Make it mandatory for African-Americans to play baseball and not choose other sports?

What makes baseball a white elitist sport? Any idiot with a stick and a ball can play it.

I said allegedly. Seems like a long way to go just to call a certified genuine brown-ribbon asshole an asshole but anything's possible I guess. Maybe he just hates anything black b/c that's all he 'remembers' seeing from sleeping off benders.

Two of my top four all-time players are black....three if you count Babe Ruth.

In all seriousness, I think this just comes down, as JORR said, to preference, and the fact that the MLB is a world league now makes it more pronounced. Looks like the numbers started dwindling in the mid-90s. I remember the 70s and 80s, when blacks had not only more numbers than today, but a cultural presence in the game . . . like the Reds and the "We Are Family" Pirates.

It's just not played as much. MANY blacks believe that their sons can be NBA players despite being 5'5". I think it's easier to earn a living playing baseball and you have a better chance to make it to the majors.

I wonder if it is easier to get a scholarship (or "money off") playing baseball or basketball? I'm assuming baseball....but I am not sure.

White privilege is an embarrassment and a cry for SJW's...find the actual problem and point to it and fix it. Claiming institutionalized racism is a weak argument...

Why? It does exist. I personally would never say or allow myself to believe that my skin color has held me back but I'm confident that has been the case and will continue to be the case for MANY people of color.

Lee's next slide shows three columns of numbers from a Princeton University study that tried to measure how race and ethnicity affect admissions by using SAT scores as a benchmark. It uses the term “bonus” to describe how many extra SAT points an applicant's race is worth. She points to the first column.

African Americans received a “bonus” of 230 points, Lee says.

“Hispanics received a bonus of 185 points.”

The last column draws gasps.

Asian Americans, Lee says, are penalized by 50 points — in other words, they had to do that much better to win admission.

“Do Asians need higher test scores? Is it harder for Asians to get into college? The answer is yes,” Lee says.
