I can see how he would make the statement, but that broadcaster comparison is hard to stomach. Love or hate the Hawkeroo he is a much easier listen than Coomdawg, has a little talent behind the mic, and knows how to tell a story.

I'm not giving you that at all. Hawk is a terrible listen, and that is why I hate him. Talent behind the mic? What? He can't even keep his temper or anger in check and do his job when things are going the Sox' way.

No question. If I had a choice of listening to Coomer give any comments...cringing...provide play by play...I would choose the Hawkeroo.

Granted I don't listen much anymore. I much prefer to remember Hawk when he was paired with the Wimperoo.

I'd rather have a mechanic fix my car than a chef. That doesn't mean the chef is bad at being a chef.

I'm not sure why they have Coomer do play by play instead of Grote. But Coomer isn't a play by play guy. He is an analyst. And he is a far better analyst than Hawk is a play by play guy.

On any medium other than sitting next to me at a bar, Coomer sucks as an analyst.

1st thing I thought of when I heard that. He also had another riveting HR call.

Coomer is awful but the Cubs have not had a good radio sidekick since Dewayne Staats.

I thought Staats was the play by play (i.e. lead) guy?

Coomer is not wrong. I haven't seen anyone like Baez. Anyone who has ever played up the middle knows his hard that play is to make. Baez makes it like no one I've ever seen. It takes some crazy hand/eye to do it the way he does.

Baez is the best I ever ever seen at the tag. Coom isn't wrong. It's not weird superlatives for the sake of filling dead air it's pretty legit a thing to say.
That being said he is worse than awful at pbp.

Yeah, he was play-by-play, though I suppose you could argue he was a sidekick to the Good Kid.

I don't disagree with the sentiment either. Ive never seen someone put it down as fast but then again maybe other announcers I've listened to over the years have never made it a point to mention when a player does it like that until now.

Quite possibly the lowest bar ever. And yes, he does love baseball/his gig. I would enjoy him a lot more if they would take away the ridiculous PBP from him.

About right...

Coomer gets shit for his PBP, which is fine. But that's like saying you don't like how Jessica Beil cleans the house. Sure she's bad at it, but that's not why she's on the payroll.

Moreso, the Hughes/Coomer broadcast is a good listen. I'm not saying that I am enthralled by the broadcast, or that I learn something every day, but it's a real comfortable listen. They obviously like each other, they give the important information, and add something once in a while.

There are much worse out there. And as guy who lives out of state now, I probably listen to about 120 games a year on the radio.

Not for nothing, but Hughes with "Chicago Cubs baseball is on the air" gets me every time.
