I'm looking forward to it. I bought the first one hook, line and sinker. I watched the documentary and I really believed it was real.

watched it again for the first time in probably 15 years, and i hate the digital transfer. on VHS it looks perfect. in the theater i saw it in via projector, it was ideal.

with the digital transfer, i can see why so many people felt dizzy and unmoved. you're too distracted by the way the camera dangles and hangs, like you're on percocet.

other than that, the acting still holds up. it's believable that these kids find themselves where they do. and their ultimate fate is credible.

it's one of those movies that comes down to the "original experience". like when someone first saw "king kong" in 1933, or someone saw "Avatar" in its 3-D glory in 2009. if you saw "blair witch" the way it was meant to be seen, it will stick with you forever. but if you saw it like any other movie, it will be forgettable and "overrated".

i think this sequel will be more standard fare, but i hope it's at least a fun ride.

The film is fairing well with reviewers so I'll give it a look

Anyone going this weekend?

If things work out, I may try to catch the late showing tonight.

Apparently, the critics don't like it, but they also told us that The Witch was an all-time classic.

It's worth seeing. I would advise to see it in the theater unless you have a great home theater setup. The peripheral noises throughout are important, so good surround sound is a must.

I guess my analysis would be this... it's a found footage horror movie shot in the woods, so obviously it's suspenseful. They'd have to screw it up pretty bad for it not to be suspenseful. But it really doesn't differentiate itself from any other movie. I remember thinking during the movie that it was better than the reviews suggested... and then when it was over, I thought "no, they were about right."

There is little in the way of good character development or good acting. The guy who I believed to be the most interesting character gets very little facetime.

Overall, it brings nothing new and isn't a great movie, but it keeps you on edge. It's certainly better than "The Witch." I think it had an impossible task of living up to the first (and everything that was "new" about the first), but it also benefits from having the prior story as the basis for its plot. If it didn't, there would be almost no actual storyline.

2.5/5 Leashes

I really thought people overrated "the witch". Technically, "The Witch" was great, but the only remotely wow part to me was the last 10 minutes.

My wife and I will prolly see "Blair Witch" in the next few days.

I'm curious to hear what you think... this is one where I truly don't know what we non-critics will think. I'm not surprised at all that the actual critics weren't huge fans.

It's hit or miss with most people who see that film. Like I said, the cinematagraphy, the set design, and just the aesthetic is good if you can make it through the slow pacing until the last 10 minutes. The end of that movie is definitely something.

Yeah, Hank, this is a perfect summation by jbills. It was a beautiful movie with great video, unique audio (lots of violin), and old English speech... but it was boring as fuck. The end gets better.

I was pumped for that movie too because Stephen King said he saw it and shit himself or something. He always does that. King has horrible taste in movies.

I wish they had put the same effort into the backstory on the internet that they did with the original

The movie pretty much lost all the steam from the first. I guess this episode did forward the story a little with the time warp aspect but this did nothing for me as a stand alone movie. The camera work was too slick. The pacing really didn't build any tension. The acting was real acting, which would have been fine if you weren't making a movie where the people aren't supposed to be actors.

There were a few things in the movie that had not point but they pretended were important. The cut on the woman's foot went NOWHERE. The camera on the tree provided no information other than a battery being drained. They could have done so many interesting and creative things with the drone but instead quickly lost it in the tree. This was really true with all the technology. It seemed like they entered the woods loaded for bear and then didn't even bother to rely on the tech when problems arose. The writers could have explored so many different areas with radio frequencies, gps, cameras, etc. but they seemed to just say "that's too difficult. fuck it, let's just write that nothing works" Finally, if you suspect non supernatural foul play with your sister and you are going to the location of the event, wouldn't you be packing?

So much talk about Heather. Couldn't they have thrown a bone to her chubby, unemployed ass and written her into this thing? If Kevin Smith can find work for Jason Mewes these guys should have been able to get Heather a payday.

This seemed like a money grab. You had almost two decades to think about how you would forward the movie and an unlimited number of cubbiegirlshamuses were happy to give you ideas with fan fiction. I expected more.

The only reason to see this is if you are a Blair Witch fan. Two champagne bottles out of four.

Spot on. One of the ways I use to judge a good movie is whether it sticks with me. The morning after seeing this, I had pretty much forgotten I even went.

Agree with the drone, too... they could have had it get taken and send pictures back to them (maybe even from the older sister?) Poor effort.

I thought it would have been very effective for the woman at the end to not turn around but to see the witch reflected on her lens and to just walk out of the house unscathed. That goofball somehow got out of the woods after having a witch incident. This woman could have as well.

The owners of the franchise really missed the boat by not having a prequel years ago. The Witch, with just a little bit of tweaking, could have worked as a Blair Witch prequel. Now, it would just seem redundant.

"the witch" needed to be made by someone that wasn't a pretentious film school brat. then it could've actually had a heart and a point.

from what i've read about "blair witch", it strikes me as another unnecessary movie that's unfortunately going to be another pock mark on mainstream horror cinema.

We saw it a couple nights ago...

SPOILERS

I liked:
-The thriller-type pacing during the back end of the movie. Once that second night begins the movie really doesn't stop until the end.
-The further explained dimensional distortion. When the two groups who were separated meet each other again, and they have different interpretations of the time since they've last seen each other was pretty cool.
-We see the Witch! A few brief glimpses, but that first one outside the house from behind the tree was pretty fucking freaky.
-I was satisfied with the limited use of "shaky cam" in this found footage film. One of the biggest complaints of the original was the sea sickness inducing movement of the camera work. Wingard did a great job I thought balancing realistic camera angles with a few hectic chase scenes that didn't overwhelm the experience of the film.

Didn't like:
-Not scary enough. As a suspenseful thriller this film is great, but it is supposed to be "the scariest movie ever", and it didn't live up to that hype. Granted, I was tense for a lot of the final act, and that witch swinging out from behind the tree got me to jump a little. Maybe I was so freaked out by the first one I expected a similar feeling. I didn't get that feeling, but I was def freaked out at a few scenes. My wife and I agreed "The Conjuring 2" was a scarier film.
-Unexplained plot lines. Wtf is up with the drone? All we get is a couple cool shots of it flying into the sky, and then the infected girl falls trying to reach it in the tree. I'm a fan of Wingard, but that was pretty weak. Having no back story for what was going on with that chick's infected foot was kind of disappointing too.
-The over the top way the black dude is so dismissive of the locals was poorly executed, and was an obvious way for the viewer not to give a fuck about him dying first. The acting in general had a few good performances, but I don't expect stellar performances when I watch a low budget movie anyway.

Overall:
I liked it, but I see why people are so mixed on it. It was more of a suspenseful thriller to me. Good horror is hard to find nowadays, and I would rank this slightly above average.

Adam Wingard is a talented director. If you've seen "You're Next" or "The Guest" (both on Netflix I think) you would think a "Blair Witch" sequel is right in his wheel house. I'd put this film behind those 2 in quality, and overall enjoyment tho.

Going forward, GD is right in saying a prequel would be a good idea, but I honestly am more interested in seeing this infallible witch get taken down somehow. How do you defeat something like that? Sending Rambo in there ain't gonna get it done. Should get John Constantine on the case. With the discovery of these new recordings you'd think a federal investigation with Mulder and Scully types, or the guys from Supernatural is the next logical step.

Im confused at what you mean. The locals said they never crossed the river, and camped over night in the woods before. It is explained once you cross the river and spend the night in the woods the spell is activated.

I think he is untrustworthy and that plays out at the end of the movie.

The girl was not with him but that guy was trolling for victims, in my opinion.

He did say at the beginning "maybe she (the witch) is using us to make you victims." And at the end he says you have to do what she tells you.

Yeah, he could have totally been a pawn of the witch the whole time for sure.

I thought he was the most memorable character. The others were soooo vanilla.
