agreed. whenever visiting my gf's family their GSP is insane. dude always want to play. great when you're over for a weekend. but everyday would be exhausting.

parents forbid having a dog. said who would take care of it when traveling and such. we had no logical rebuttal.

You have a girlfriend?

During the day, our dog just stays at home. My wife doesn't work traditional hours, so she's usually only gone for a few hours. However, she used to be gone all day, and he was fine. If we go on a trip, we have friends or family watch him.

Is somebody going to ask Terrible IT Guy if he can stream some Sarah McLaughlin songs for this thread?

No, we only crated him as a puppy. He has free reign now.

When we travel there is a local place here that I kennel him at. They used to breed Boxers and currently breed Mastiffs so they love having him
there. They take him out and play with him and he usually gets a bath and nails trimmed while there so it works out really well. Ends up costing
like $40 a day to kennel him but overall that isn't too bad. The dog stays out all the time at our house. I come home for lunch to let him out to
use the yard so he is never home alone much more than 5-6 hours tops. If it is going to be longer than that we don't trust him and he will be
kenneled in the basement.

I don't have pets but my sister's family has a dog. Early last summer he (Hunter) became very sick, was paralyzed, and partially blind. They noticed he was having difficulty walking, going up and down stairs, and seemed lethargic. After an initial test that yielded a false positive an MRI revealed that he had blastomycosis. They live in Kenosha and took him to an animal hospital in Madsion where he was treated and stayed a few days so they could monitor his condition. After that he received medication three times a weeks for four weeks and his condition was monitored as that particular treatment can be rough on the kidneys.

He's very cute and funny. He's an English Springer Spaniel and is very bound-y. He's three, and a couple of years ago my sister said they really should have named him Joey, after the character from Friends, because he's not all that bright and will hump anything. Until he got fixed he had a little blanket that he would do absolutely obscene things to.

When he was in the hospital they brought along a blanket from their couch that smells like everyone (and home) and his favorite chew toy so he'd have some familiar things during his stay

He enjoys festive headgear

My brother-in-law made this little stretcher to carry him in when he was paralyzed. It was easier than trying to carry him (he weighs 55lbs.)
Image

After his treatment they bought a little inflatable pool to put in their backyard for "hydrotherapy" for him so he could swim and help regain his strength. He made a remarkable recovery and is about 85% of what he was before he got sick.

He's a good boy.

That's pretty cool Tad. Great story. Your sister and bro in law are good people.

Idk what I would do if our cat needed meds 3 times a days. Both my wife and I are working full time, and I can't imagine relying on someone else to administer meds.

my dogs are alone for ~10 hours when i'm at work

i certainly wouldn't subject a new dog to something like that
but they're perfectly fine, never any accidents or issues

Nice story Tad. The museums have been busy this year here in Kenosha. When they don't have their own respective exhibits, they are right in the
middle of everything going on festival-wise down by the lake including the farmers market which gets larger each month it seems.

My family's dog is Shadow, a black lab. They got him 4-5 years ago when I was still in Texas. Not sure exactly where they went to get him, but I guess they were under the impression that he was fully healthy, etc. They got him in early summer and it was a particularly hot summer, and he wasn't gaining weight even though he was only 5-6 months old. One Saturday they all had a wedding to go to, and fed him in the morning and left. When they got back that evening he was laying down in the hallway and they couldn't get him to his feet. Ended up taking him to a vet and found out he was diabetic and had a missing pancreas. By that time they had already got attached to him so they decided to end up spending the $500-600 a month or whatever on medication and enzyme powder and shit for him. He appears to be as healthy as an ox now. He's a pretty damn good dog.

I think this is the only picture I have of him.

Two chihuahuas. One named after RGIII. The other after a beer. They weigh a combined ten lbs. Love those jerks to death.

Have three dogs (apologies in advance for the huge pics) -

Baxter - 14 yr old golden I've had since we first moved into our house...not sure how much more time we have with him, but he's still getting along pretty well.

Image

Buddy is our 10 yr old Lab/Pyrenees mix. My wife's friend was moving and was going to dump him off at a shelter (even though they got more dogs after they moved), so we took him in. He's a bit of a jag, but he's our jag.

Image

Finally Emma, almost 3 yr old pit mix we rescued from CACC when she was a puppy. She's a clown.

We had a dog when we were first married. The neighbors had a full-blood brown collie, which ran loose in our farming neighborhood. She was bred by some unknown stud, and produced four little black and white pups. We assumed it was the black lab or black chow living on the other side of their place, due to color. Boy, he sure looked like those Burnese pictures!

My wife watched the pups with the two little neighbor girls, and noticed one of them did not jump on people or bark hardly ever. She said that was ours, and he was. Really bright, trainable, hated being tied up. He ran the area with his mom for a couple years until we had our first son, then he got tied up more often. One winter morning he was out having fun and just never came back. We told the kids we would get a dog when we moved to the farm, but she vetoed that idea when we did. Oldest son has yet to forgive her for that.

My parents love watching him for the reasons mentioned throughout the thread... they're getting up there in age and don't want the responsibility of owning a dog, but they love watching our dog for a week or so. I almost think my dad likes watching the dog more than watching my daughter.

My mom would take her but my dad is not a dog fan and thinks she is a huge pain in the ass. She is. She listens to me and sometimes my husband but nobody else. She can be naughty too.
