I think Dan desperately wants to be David Foster Wallace—writing these long, gloriously discursive sentences full of callbacks and cultural references and wordplay that finally reveal the deeper human truths at the heart of banal pursuits like sports. Obviously Dan isn’t in the same universe as Wallace as a writer, but I actually don’t think it would matter even if he were. Dan’s real problem is that he’s a stuffy old scold who fancies himself A Serious Journalist, so his literary pretensions are always bound by the selfsame rules (primarily, a self-effacing tone of “objectivity”) that Wallace made a career out of toying with and inverting. So what you get is a guy of slightly above-average intelligence desperately trying to prove he’s smart by aping the style of a bona fide genius whose aforementioned style was all about desperately trying to distance himself from his own intelligence, and failing because he also wants to make clear that he knows a lot of big words. It's all quintessentially postmodern and brilliantly Wallaceian. If only he were doing it on purpose.

Anyone hear the Drinky Bernstein fight that happened around 5? Drinky went after Dan for being a dismissive ass to callers. Said that his attitude was worst than stupid callers, and they Dan's badgering made the calls worst. Dan started to make fun of him in his rube caller voice and Drinky fired back at him and ended it by saying it was time to go to break.

Best listen of the show in awhile. And it's good criticism. Can't call the callers stupid without even letting them speak.

Yeah, I heard it. Dan dismissed a caller who said Floyd looked like a bust. Said it was too soon too tell and yelled "meatball", etc.

He also mocked Abbatacola for the "standing up to Bernstein" thing. Kept saying in a meatball voice "YEAH, YOU PUT 'DAT BERNSTINE IN HIS PLACE!"

it's been said before, but he thinks it gets ratings to yell at callers.

And I think Matt is starting to believe that if he becomes the "anti-Bernstein" of the station, he may have a future there on-air. Since Terry has been out, Matt seems more and more forward with his open criticism of Dan and his shtick.

they're friends off screen. Matt would be wise to sell himself as that. Teaming with Jason would go a long way toward that. Jason from time to time will step on Dan's cape too. But overall they all get along, so any screaming sounds a little contrived.

I'd listen to Matt and Jason. Matt does what Spiegs does minus the smoothness but minus the smarm. Jason would probably feel more comfortable, which usually results in Jason slowwwwingggg down, and less fake laughter and console pounding. I like a show that laughs a lot, and a good console pound is fine, but it just seems forced with Jason a lot of the time, compared to his solo shows or his time with B&B.

Well, I don't remember the original thread, which probably didn't survive the various board purges anyway, but one time I was browsing her twitter timeline (there must have been some drama tangentially involving her, I wanna say it was the time she said having sex with white people was cultural appropriation) and she posted a picture of herself in Raiders gear (good for her!), and who do I see in the replies but fuckin' Quad Cities Pat e-prostrating himself before her, babbling on and on about how stupid and gross Bears fans are while she at best half-acknowledged him. It was so off-putting that I actually would have been less uncomfortable if he had asked her for foot pictures.
