Some groups (like partisans) need to sustain themselves with this sort of refusal to concede or play ball. Playing ball (even if it means trying to soften your image in order to be more persuasive) may be seen as weakness, selling out, or diluting the message and thereby hurting the group. I think that is true for partisans, but not sure about BLM. They're like partisans in other ways, too.
