The Eastside is south of 55th and East of State.

I can't think of Hyde Park as the east side, sorry. The south side can mean lots of things to lots of people but the east side is just ports, canals, and steel mills to me.

That's what J Hood taught me.

Agreed. Chicago isn't really East until you get to about Marquette Blvd. Even then it still isn't all that East. Probably 75th street if you want to be honest. Too far south at that point to simply be considered East.

Actually, it's the other way around: the Avenue _ streets were meant to be the north-south streets that began with A, continuing east to west through the alphabet, which obviously no one followed through on except for the Ks and I think the Ls and Ms.

It goes all the way to the P's.

The north-souths were originally numbered, but Cicero and Berwyn kept the numbers, hence the 54th/Cermak Pink Line stop that sounds like a Jason Goff intersection at first.

The east side is the 10th ward. Vrdoliak country.

Down in Hegwich and down by Wolf lake there are parts that are quite nice. It has all gone down hill since the Golden Shell closed, however.

More pop song geography...

"The Night Chicago Died"

By: Paper Lace

Daddy was a cop on the east side of Chicago
Back in the U.S.A. back in the bad old days

In the heat of a summer night
In the land of the dollar bill
When the town of Chicago died
And they talk about it still

When a man named Al Capone
Tried to make that town his own
And he called his gang to war
With the forces of the law

I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night it really was
Brother what a fight it really was
Glory be!...

I just want the record to show that when I implore Management to punish for derogatory posts about Polish people, I am entirely kidding.

I'm sure you are but that's not something that we want around here. If you really have to share ignorant "jokes" just PM SPmack.

There most certainly is an East side, you guys just ain't looking far enough east... (reference my location)

Mom was born and grew up, I think, 46th and Western, was nearly all Poles in the 40s, her cousins got out in the 70s when the PR "invaded", as the family story goes. Seems Grandpa got involved in some low level of politics after the War, then suddenly had to change his name and move to the country with no warning. His relatives were hesitant to come to the Mitten because of fear of "indian attacks". I wish some of them had lived long enough for me to understand all they were saying.

This is dumb.

Everything with East on the address is the east part of the city. Not that hard to understand.

Addresses in the Loop would not be considered north, south, west, or east. They're just downtown. I don't think you can start talking about sides of town until you're past River North, the West Loop, or, begrudgingly, the "South Loop."

Agreed.

Outside of The Loop, you can apply don's logic.

Despite being built on a grid, I don't think you can apply any logic to the city of Chicago.

For all the "lol the east side is the lake" hackery, it is worth noting that you can speak of a north, northwest, west, southwest, south, southeast, and east side of Chicago, but there is no real northeast side. I suppose that's the lake.

Technically it could be Streeterville & the Illinois Center

Technically, yeah, that's where the precious few N/E addresses are, but I feel like saying it out loud would make you sound like a pod person.

We're supposed to call Illinois Center the "New East Side" now. Frankly, I don't think either name is apt.
