She's still hittable, too. Sorry, but it is true.

All day, every day. As a 50-something myself, Dan Hicks is a lucky SOB to get to fuck that regularly.

I wonder if they will posthumously give him the CY.

Would be kind of cool, to be honest.

Clementeesque immediate induction into HOF. In assumed Cubs cap.

Huge loss for MLB and the Marlins.

Very sad. You hope alcohol wasn't involved but shocked if it wasn't.

RIP.

I don't know, ask Oscar Taveras, Tim Crews or Steve Olin.

i've been up on jose fernandez since he first showed up in MLB. honestly i had no idea who he was until a fantasy baseball buddy on IRC said "holy shit jose fernandez made the marlins opening day rotation!" and i went and grabbed him in all of my leagues. welp, except for nas' sandlot league. nas had the most waiver $$$ and therefore he had his choice of jose fernandez and jackie bradley jr. i figured nas was gonna take jose so i put in a bid of $666 (we started with $1000 and nas had like $900+ to my ~880 or something) and said "IF LORD SATAN WILLS IT!"

i was shocked to see nas get his jackie bradley jr for $900+ and i got jose fernandez for $666. later in the year when jackie bradley jr was back in the minors and fernandez was an instant star/stud/etc nas tried claiming that he fucked up his waiver priority and he meant to get fernandez #1 bradley #2... suuuuure. even if it happened i guess satan's got my back, eh?

anyways, because i had fernandez in all of my leagues i made it a point to pay attention to the guy. i'll never forget when heading into his first start against the mets some reporter asked him if he was afraid to face david wright in his first MLB start. jose's response was legend

Jose Fernandez (paraphrased ~5%) wrote:
I was afraid when I was in the raft [trying to flee Cuba] and they were shooting at me. I was afraid when my grandma fell out of the raft and I didn't know if I'd ever see her again. I was afraid when I was in jail and I didn't know if I'd ever be released. What's David Wright going to do to me?

RIP Jose, you were literally and figuratively a cicero rockstar for life!

I actually did. He was only a Cardinal for a few months. A sad footnote in the flukiest Championship year I recall in my lifetime.

if apologist forgot josh hancock does darryl kyle go without saying?

btw i was just reminded that jose fernandez made the jump straight from single A to MLB when he first showed up in... 2013? yeah i think it was 2013. i guess he started off 2013 ST in marlins camp and was so damn good that they just threw him into the fire and he came out unscathed. even getting TJ ~1.5 months into his 2nd season and not coming back until midway thru last season (and having another ~6 week injury in there) = he was still doing his thing to the extent where his final start will go down as 8IP 0ER 12K. i think he ended up with a career 2.53/1.05 in ~476IP.... prolly ~550-600K+... and i still don't think we saw his best because despite all of his inherent !!! and gaudy K numbers he still was a ~2.75-3.25 ERA pitcher cuz every now and then he'd just get knocked around.... but he also had this knack to get stuck with anywhere from 2-5 early runs and then make that total stick through 6-7IP. hell a couple'a starts ago against the braves i think they got ~5ER against him in the 1st or 2nd inning and he managed to stick around and go ~7IP, which was a sign of his excellence IMO. anyone can frontrun with a 0-1ER game, but to get absolutely hammered in the first/second inning and then go and put up 4-6 more 0's on the board = hell of a pitcher.

and i'll never forget watching all of the opening day games in 2014 and remembering "man, jose fernandez looked like the best pitcher out there on opening day. it just seems to simple for him.... fastball, curveball, changeup. he was still due to have a career year where he likely made the push towards/into "kershaw country" (sub-2 ERA) but alas, he'll end up never having a chance to get past his usual 2.75-3.25 zone even tho he could always get you the strikeouts. RIP dude. hopefully my flagship team can hold on this week and maybe pull one out (against nas?) next week to win one for you here.

also, added tragedy = he had just impregnated his girlfriend and "announced it" via posting a picture of her bikini-clad baby bump on instagram 5 days ago. at least he got to father a kid who you hope will be a "masculine child" who people can go out of their way to teach him how to pitch.

If I were to take issue with the game's cancellation, it would only be because not only do the Marlins have postseason concerns to be playing for this late in the season, but so do their opponents.

That said, if it were rainy all day today, the end result (a previously unscheduled double-header tomorrow) would be the same.

I will readily admit that this is an exceedingly hot take, and am somewhat ashamed that it crossed my mind today in the car while listening to the coverage on MLB Network Radio. But the Marlins franchise is officially fucked forever. Time to for some team, probably an AL team, to put together a package for Stanton which the Mariins cannot afford to refuse. Stanton is set to make just $14.5M in 2017, then $25-26M in 2018-2020. Then he has a choice of opting out or getting a remaining $200M over 7 years.

I had tickets to the Hancock game in St. Louis. It did feel like a little bs when they would only offer a make up game. They would not refund our tickets.

The Braves were eliminated from the playoffs in May.

A rain out at a domed stadium would certainly be a thing.

Well, 'was' is the correct conjugation of the verb.
