Yeah, that's why I thought it was surprising how powerful they were at Riot Fest on a hot fucking day. Dulli was wearing a coat and tie and sweating his balls off. They were fucking intense.
Not all bands belong in front of stadium crowds. In fact, very few do. And outdoor festivals are a strange thing. A lot of it has to do with how you are feeling at the moment. One of the most memorable shows I ever saw was Flaming Lips in the gloaming at Lollapalooza. The weather was perfect, my buzz was just right, there were cool chicks kicking beachballs and throwing frisbees around me, and the Lips played a great set. On the other hand, I saw Lou Reed in the daytime, maybe at Navy Pier, and he was good, but it was odd. Lou Reed really shouldn't have ever appeared in the daylight.
