I was really just giving Someguy crap. Everyone relax; I'm not trying to ruin Musk's street cred.

Strange.

That man is the truth.

But seriously

His point is basically there is not return on investment for Elons company. And at the end of the day, a company's goal is to make money. Also, the reason we went to the moon was because of the military, and we do not have that for Mars. In a few of his interviews, he does say IF the Chinese said tomorrow they were going to colonize Mars, we would be there in 9 months.

Weird that he said that. I remember him stating that the value of space travel is difficult to measure because of the dual-use technology that is discovered in the process of trying to solve the incredible task of space travel.

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/neil-degrasse- ... on-1502945

He's an great talk show guest. Thought his A.I. views were a bit underwhelming.

(I haven't read that article but will later today)

I try and listen to all his appearances, I know he talks about things like the microwave being invented because of NASA.

I think he is pretty much saying, there has to be a reason ie militaristic or economic to do something like this.

We'll get there in our lifetime, as astronauts, but I would doubt colonization for a long time.
I think we do have the tech though.
But a major concern in my opinion is the psychological effects of such a trip. It's probably a one way ticket and it would take perhaps 18 to 24 months to get there.

I thought it was a nine month trip.

At least that's what Neil DeGrasse Tyson is always telling me.

Well... it's largely dependent on when the mission launches... there are times Mars is close (opposition) and times its more than twice as far away.

At first, you think it would be a good idea to go out there with your wife. Then, after a few days of being cooped up in the capsule together, you realize you made a very bad mistake.

I don't mean you, of course. You have the most magical relationship god has ever blessed a man with.

I really do want to see what makes you two so great but I don't want you to know that I am observing.

Don't be alarmed if you happen to hear the bushes rustling outside your window.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk continues to lay the groundwork to attempt the human colonization of Mars. Here’s a step-by-step guide to his plan:

STEP 1

Invent remaining 2,348 technologies needed to make trip possible

STEP 2

$10 billion appears

STEP 3

Cost of spaceship reduced by going with cheap Venetian plaster instead of more expensive marble

STEP 4

Before departing, voyagers visit doctor to receive all the CDC–recommended vaccines for trip to another celestial body

STEP 5

Tell poor people we’ll come back for them

STEP 6

Humanity runs away from all of its problems at 5,375 mph

STEP 7

Spaceship gets passed on left by reckless asteroid

STEP 8

Those not murdered by fellow passengers land safely on Mars three months later

STEP 9

Set up utilities and Wi-Fi

STEP 10

Apply for construction permits within notoriously byzantine bureaucracy of the Intergalactic Department of Buildings

STEP 11

Group photo

STEP 12

Build entire civilization from scratch

STEP 13

Future Mars population considers colonizing barren wasteland of Earth in last-ditch effort to save species

JoeOrr thinks you have to keep your sportcoat on for the entire 18-24month trip.

I think it would be an interesting cultural experiment to only send smart, athletic and beautiful people there to see if we could start a breed of super humans.

Someone has to pedantically point out that what happens in science fiction movies couldn't happen in real life.

Thank you, Black Science Man!

And it would have worked too if it wasn't for James Bond.
