Depends. Is the 16 year-old a male or female?

Female robot/male student

My 16 year old nephew is on Facebook and shit all day long when he's at school. Every now and again, either my wife or I will call him out on there with a "aren't you in class?" type of comment, and his response is always, "it doesn't matter in class, we can do whatever we want".

Fucking weird to me.

Do you really think they go straight from student teaching and college to making $65K?

As a parent that's occasionally active that has to be near the top of the list.

Even if they're paying attention in class, the minute it's over they go right to the phone. The way the brain works, it requires some time for the lessons to sink in. By immediately going to the phone, they are basically erasing everything they have just heard in class.

Has anyone watched The Brain with David Eagleman? Fascinating show.

In that case, probation. If it were the other way around, they'd cut his cord off.

Disciplining students is a risky endeavor. And if it is not risky, it's a pain in the ass because you have to go through so much red tape. Administrators are generally awful.

You have to be careful when telling students to knock it off and get busy. You'll hear about it. Parents can be fucking awful....and administrators in many schools can be counted on to take the side of the parents.

Whatever happened to policies of phones being left in lockers, or even better, at home?

Unfortunately, that solution could cause more problems than it solves. The phone has become almost a necessity for teens, at least, given the way our society is set up; what's more, 90% of Americans seem hell-bent on living in luxury. It's not just having stuff; we expect to be pampered.

Can't leave them at home, since parents might need to contact them for rides, etc. Ok, I;m fine with that.

So leave them in your locker. Well...they simply won't. Some schools will confiscate the phones and fine the students, but the schools usually give in when the parents get involved. No one wants to be the bad guy. Eventually, the school caves. Students sense this.

It's too much of a temptation, and it's really hurting education. The scary thing is that many students think they are smarter than they actually are, or they confuse having access to information with understanding.

I was talking to my friend's kid who attends an East Coast prep school. I asked him if phones were allowed in class. He said not only are they allowed, but you can sit in class and play on the phone all day if you want and nobody cares. And if you fail your tests nobody cares about that either. You're gone. Of course, it takes a certain type of kid to attend this place. Nobody is going to wipe your ass for you. It's more like being in college.

That's absolutely true. There was a guy I used to know who had a PhD in adult learning or something like that. When he taught a class, he would allow 10 minutes after each segment to reflect. Additionally, in classes I used to teach, we would have class members physically write things they learned... but it had to be actual pen to paper and not typing because the physical action of writing causes the brain to remember things.

What is even scarier to me than the retention is the fact that these kids' brains are obviously changing and ruining their attention spans. They can't FOCUS on things for long enough to actually complete anything. Hell, I even notice this phenomenon in myself (typically while at home). I'll feel like I need to run back and check my phone if I'm away from it. If that happens, I'll usually try to disconnect for a couple days and reset. I can't imagine someone who is 14 years old having that issue. Their brains are still forming.

In most cases a phone isn't necessary. I won't buy my kids a phone unless I see it as a need. The tablets and computers are more than enough to get school work done.

That's how it should be. I mean, students should be supported and taught how to manage their time and so on, and some may need more help, but....even in teaching college, I have to give students numerous chances and alert their advisors and the counseling center (which is usually not effective)....I don't mind doing this, but at some point, some of these kids--maybe half of them at one of the schools I am an adjunct at--need to go away until they are ready. They're just not ready for the workload or they lack the skills they should have acquired earlier. The problem is that they will still want that B when they are doing D work.

I'm very understanding as a teacher, but I'm also a dick. I'll confront them ("Put your phone away now or you can get out") if they are on their phones, and we'll read about the issue a bit as well. I've gotten in trouble (not re-hired) at one school because of this, but maybe that was a good thing. Nobody wants to be the bad guy.

What's really messed-up is the State Assessment Tests. A good percent of the population is basically illiterate. This is not even counting many students who have to tell their answers to a teacher because they do not speak English or have a disability.

Even more frightening is that a little less than 1 percent of the tests talk about- beatings, rapes, drugs or are just drawings of violence. Some of the time it's just kids acting out, but how bad is your home life if you need the outlet of a state assessment test?

I dunno. In high school, they may need it to coordinate rides and so forth. It's also something that can help keep them safe (though it may make usually safe situations dangerous as well, since they are focused on their devices). Grammar school, no fucking way.

My daughter just started high school, and we got her one, and I'm glad she has it. It helps coordinate things and I like being able to send her messages occasionally. But I told her that if she uses it in class, I'd take it away and smash it with a hammer or some other heavy metal (need a guitar playing emoji here). I also didn't want her to be the only kid in the school without a phone. I hate that I give in to that, and we raised her to be confident, but...this culture has its shitty aspects.

Finally, she needs a place to put all the cool Gen-X music she is listening to now that she is fourteen! (Actually, she's in her hippie stage.)

And now I will shut the hell up and listen.

Well said, leash. That teacher sounds really smart.

But yeah, the need to run and check the phone.....I never check mine and quit FB for this reason....I feel chained (leashed <---very witty!! + 3) to it. Ok, now I'll shuddup.

Seeing all this, my kids are going to hate me when they get to school age...I guess I just have that old school mentality that you're at school to learn, not to fuck around on your phone.

Phones are the single biggest issue in schools today. Every student has one and just about every student believes that they are entitled to use it whenever they deem it necessary. The problem with confiscating them is that you own it if you lose it. I worked with a teacher that lost a kids phone and paid $250 after losing it.

It is distracting in the classroom if you allow it. You can walk into a classroom and literally see upwards of 20 students all using their phones. Some are texting while others are listening to music. Some even hold conversations on it while teachers are attempting to provide instruction. In these situations I don't necessarily blame the kids all the time either. MANY teachers are prone to use Marquis of Queensbury tactics whenever it comes to engaging kids. They are simply reluctant to do it. They believe that it is the job of others whenever it comes to classroom management. Others pretend that they don't see it while some attempt to make the case that it really doesn't impact instruction. Newsflash it does. A student that is more engaged in the phone than they are in the lesson will rarely be successful. If you are allowing them to use the phone then you don't know if they are cheating either. Kids will look up information on their phone or send text messaged photos of assignments or tests. It is a real hindrance in the classroom if you allow it. I attempt to counsel teachers against the practice of allowing phones but unfortunately few actually heed it in my opinion.

Seeing all this, my kids are going to hate me when they get to school age...I guess I just have that old school mentality that you're at school to learn, not to fuck around on your phone.

I do too. Plus I know about the naked pictures and other stupid shit kids do.
